Wont start - Roadie - 05-04-14

Finally went to get the old girl started today after eventually getting the timing cover gasket delivered.  I cannot see where anything has changed as I only removed the covers on the engine to see what may have been causing it not to turn over after sitting idle for over a year.  Turned out it only seemed to be really gummed up.

Turns over well even on an FZS600 battery but it struggled to start, sounded like three cylinders, take the choke off it died.  Not it wont start at all.  I notice that with the ignition off the tacho needle is pointing to 6 o'clock ?!  Crank it over it kicks up towards the zero marker but is obviously on the wrong side of the stop.

When the timing cover came off it took the long dowel out with it.  Any chance it may have slipped on the chain?  I dont see why that would kick off the tacho?

All seems very odd Sad

Any help appreciated before I call the local mechanic out to take it away to fix.

You can drag the tacho needle back with a strong magnet.

It's a good bet that the pilot jets are clogged which is why it's struggling to start and won't run without choke.  Carbs out and a proper clean required.

Don't sweat the ignition timing - that's not the problem here. Smile

+1 had the same problem with a blandit 600 yesterday, been stood 7 months only ran on full choke. Stripped and cleaned carbs found fuel had varnished the insides if the carbs and blocked the jets. It's now running sweet as a nut Smile

Got it to catch so it's now running fine Smile

Took the gauges off, stripped the cowling down, cranked the needle back to position, put it all back so it now works also.

Well happy.  Quick going over and get it MoT'd
