I had the same problem when I got my Fazer. The metal stalks were really shabby looking. I took them off the bike and taped up everything I didn't want to get paint on (taped a plastic bag around the mirror/head) then sanded them with fairly light sand paper. I then used some primer spray paint and some Black spray paint and they have come up a treat.
