flaking wing mirrors - mobile mouse - 04-03-14 Hi, I fitted non OEM wing mirrors a couple of year ago. I ride through winter so they get all the weather you can throw at them. But since Christmas the paint has started flaking off the stalks. The aluminium underneath is not looking good. I am not sure what to do it. It does not look nice at the moment. Any help would be grateful. Cheers, Re: flaking wing mirrors - Chris - 04-03-14 I had the same problem when I got my Fazer. The metal stalks were really shabby looking. I took them off the bike and taped up everything I didn't want to get paint on (taped a plastic bag around the mirror/head) then sanded them with fairly light sand paper. I then used some primer spray paint and some Black spray paint and they have come up a treat. Chris Re: flaking wing mirrors - mobile mouse - 04-03-14 Hi, I wasn't sure about a re spray because the ball joint for he mirror head is also flaking. But if they come up good then I may well go the way of a re spray to get them back to black. Mine are foxeye items. Did you remove the rubber boots. Cheers, Re: flaking wing mirrors - Chris - 05-03-14 I made sure the tape went right into the ball joint and moved the mirror head so that I could sand as much of the flaking stuff off around the ball as possible then just sprayed it all. The rubber boots can be a pain to remove so I just pulled them down the stalks as far as they would go without damaging them then taped them off. Hope that helps, sorry I never got any pictures when I was doing them or I'd be able to just show you what I did. Go for it though, the worst that can happen is that you get some paint on stuff. You can always clean/sand it off if you're not happy with it and spray them again ![]() Think I used 2000 grit sand paper so that I didn't leave any deeper scratches in the alloy but as long as you take your time it'll be fine. A primer coat will help smooth it out then nice thin coats of whatever colour you want to finish it off with plenty time between coats so you don't get runs. Nothing worse than dribbles down your stalk... oooer.... haha ![]() Chris |
