Yep, it happens.
Usually the first sign is it's a struggle to get the thing up on the stand because it's twisting slightly. Then it breaks.
Poor design really, it could do with more bracing. (Corrosion hasn't been the problem on mine, it's stress fractures.)
Exactly what happened to mine, hard work getting bike up then noticed the rust.
Was fortunate to win a bid on a virtually new looking one on Flebay at 1am one morning for 99p with £8 postage, i was very happy.
When i took the old one off it was really twisted, they just buckle once weak.
Plenty good ones about though, and a bit of smooth Hammerite would be a good idea before fitting.

Glad this came up cos mine's a right bugger to get on the centre stand - couldn't work out why, just thought it was me! Will have a good look over mine.
