Snapped Centre Stand!! - N A Chess - 13-01-14 So there I was, just pushed off the centre stand, mounted, and went to ride away only to hear and awful clanking noise. WTF! :'( My centre stand had snapped toward the right hand side and the broken piece was just dragging along the ground......... I suppose years of crud, rust and stress on it meant eventual failure - I tend to use the centre stand more than the side stand. Anyway, a kind RAC man used a couple of cable ties and I was on my way. Thing is, as the bike is approaching its 15th year, I was at the point of wondering whether to spend money to keep it going was a wise move. I have just spent short of £300 on two new front discs and so I am sort of committed now. If I knew things were going to start fall apart I may have thought differently............. But it's the best bike I have owned in 30 years of riding, so I'll give it another chance. Seen a couple of centre stands on eBay for around £20 :lol Re: Snapped Centre Stand!! - fazersharp - 13-01-14 Can we have a picture Is it rusting from the inside or just outside, the reason I ask for extra info is the mine too is 15 years old and want to see exactly where yours went so I want to pay that area a bit of TLC on mine. Going to take it off and clean up and respray Re: Snapped Centre Stand!! - Fazerider - 13-01-14 Yep, it happens. Usually the first sign is it's a struggle to get the thing up on the stand because it's twisting slightly. Then it breaks. Poor design really, it could do with more bracing. (Corrosion hasn't been the problem on mine, it's stress fractures.) Re: Snapped Centre Stand!! - darrsi - 13-01-14 (13-01-14, 10:44 PM)Fazerider link Wrote: Yep, it happens. Exactly what happened to mine, hard work getting bike up then noticed the rust. Was fortunate to win a bid on a virtually new looking one on Flebay at 1am one morning for £1.99 with £8 postage, i was very happy. When i took the old one off it was really twisted, they just buckle once weak. Plenty good ones about though, and a bit of smooth Hammerite would be a good idea before fitting. I believe my first post on here was about fitting my new stand. ![]() Re: Snapped Centre Stand!! - Chris - 14-01-14 I've been keeping my eye out for one too as mine has started to corrode on the centre brace between the legs... I suppose it's probably not worth trying to fix this one as it'll be stressed in quite a few areas. Will have a good look over mine. Thanks for the heads up fellas :thumbup Re: Snapped Centre Stand!! - griff86 - 14-01-14 This was my stand before and after powdercoat, luckily I got it sorted before bad corrosion set in. Not worth attempting to fix, they just turn to cheese after rust has set in. And from the top looking down (bit we cant see in your pictures) is it hollow so we can get some sort of waxoil or acf50 down there to protect inside. And is that spring new or cleaned up. And how easy or not is the stand to get on and off. I am so doing mine this year, I have kept it touched up and dont ride in the wet but its still going rusty. Re: Snapped Centre Stand!! - Fuzzy - 14-01-14 I'm having mine powdercoated too right now as we speak. You can spray into the hollow bits which you can just about stick a straw in, main ones being the centre brace and the "foot lever". Take the stand off first though, makes life easier. Getting the stand on and off is much easier than I first thought, really a walk in the park and you can grease the pivots whilst you're there. Cost for blast + powdercoat (no masking necessary) for the centre stand and side stand = £50. Got the springs powdercoated for that price too, but this will not be as good as whatever Griff has done (flash coating or something?) It doesn't mean that the rest of the bike is about to fall apart. Re: Snapped Centre Stand!! - griff86 - 14-01-14 My powder coating cost £18.50 plus vat, plus delivery at Triple S, they do a great job. Yeah I had the springs flash coated, to be honest I'm not sure what that is either as it's a friend of a friend that works in an engineering company who did the springs. I want my wheels done next, I've had the forks and swing arm done. Re: Snapped Centre Stand!! - darrsi - 15-01-14 There's a stand here that looks in pretty good nick if anyone needs one? http://www.fazerspares.com/items/132-1_916-stand-centre.htm Re: Snapped Centre Stand!! - N A Chess - 15-01-14 Can we have a picture Is it rusting from the inside or just outside, the reason I ask for extra info is the mine too is 15 years old and want to see exactly where yours went so I want to pay that area a bit of TLC on mine. Going to take it off and clean up and respray I'll have a go when I sort out the replacement - but I have never uploaded a piccie before :eek . The cable ties seem to be doing their job, however.
