On a positive note (if there is one) a bit of sand will probably just sit on the bottom of the tank. The tap that fits in the bottom of the tank has a stand pipe on it that is 40mm long. Most of it is a gauze filter but the bottom 14mm is not gauze, just tube. So there is always about 1.5 litres of fuel still in the tank when you try to run it dry. Might be as well to check if your tap is the same though.
Good bit. The sand will probably just sit at the bottom of the tank. If it gets up to the gauze it probably wont get through. If it gets through the gauze the main fuel filter will stop it.
Bad bit. If you take the tank off you will struggle to get every last bit of sand out. Even getting the last bit of fuel (or some water) out takes a lot of shaking the tank about.
