Sand in my tank? - chaz - 26-11-13 Today I went to Tesco for petrol, opened my tank put the nozzle in then noticed it was covered in sand, someone had dropped it into the sand on the forecourt. I didn't put any fuel in but could see sand on the metal bit in the tank. I went in and complained about this and also about another diesel spill at another pump, fair enough they cleaned the sand off the pump and put sand on the spill. When I asked what they were going to do about the sand in my tank, they said I would have to see the manager but he was busy at the moment? (probably hiding so he wouldn't have to deal with me). Do you think I should take the tank off to clean it out, I did get what I could out of the filler, or do you think the small amount that may be in will be ok, and should I take the matter up with Tesco? I've emailed Tescos see if anything happens? Re: Sand in my tank? - Gav - 26-11-13 Bummer. If it was just a little bit of sand I'd probably leave it and replace the fuel filter in a few weeks or after xmas, once the sand has worked through. If you have dumped a beach in there then that's worth washing out and moaning to tescos to get at least a free tank o fuel. There are some muppets out there to dip the nozzle in sand.ffs Re: Sand in my tank? - taylor - 26-11-13 I use sthil saws a lot in work, one day one knackerd up, it was pretty new so took it back, the bloke was adamant I had not used two stroke which I had in a measured can, anyway tests where run on it etc etc, turns out sand had got in the machine, it must have been on my fuel can, it scored the pistons damaged rings etc, and in the end kerput, so be carefull chaz, it happens. Re: Sand in my tank? - limax2 - 26-11-13 On a positive note (if there is one) a bit of sand will probably just sit on the bottom of the tank. The tap that fits in the bottom of the tank has a stand pipe on it that is 40mm long. Most of it is a gauze filter but the bottom 14mm is not gauze, just tube. So there is always about 1.5 litres of fuel still in the tank when you try to run it dry. Might be as well to check if your tap is the same though. Good bit. The sand will probably just sit at the bottom of the tank. If it gets up to the gauze it probably wont get through. If it gets through the gauze the main fuel filter will stop it. Bad bit. If you take the tank off you will struggle to get every last bit of sand out. Even getting the last bit of fuel (or some water) out takes a lot of shaking the tank about. |
