Some bikes need them more than others. I'd guess that with the kind of geometry you get on some sports bikes, which are designed to turn into a corner quickly, it can lead to instability problems at high speeds, when pushed really hard. It was common to put them on older Jap bikes in the 70s and 80s, cos they didn't tend to handle very well at speed.
But the Fazer has a lazier geometry which makes it steadier at speed, tho not as quick to turn. I questioned about dropping them on the forks (quickens the steering) but everyone who's done it says they can take that and still be stable at high speed.
