It advances the ignition timing off idle as you open the throttle. The bike has an a Elctronic Control Unit of sorts under the tail section and under the Toolkit, which Yamaha call the Ignitor, It is a little more than your basic electronic ignition as it also controls the ignition timimg based on engine speed and throttle position base on the TPS info. A faulty or wrongly adjusted TPS can often cause a flat spot around 7000 revs.
