How much oil to put back in?

I completely ignore the oil capacities in every way other than knowing how much I roughly need to purchase. Its a simple case of just putting oil in until it is within the min - max gauges on any vehicle. For the bike, it may well be 2.7 litres, I haven't paid enough attention to actually check

As for my car, there have been reports on the owners forum of anything between 4.5 to 5.2 (what Haynes says) to 7 litres!!  :eek
