Naturally thought batteries were dead but it kept doing it with new ones. Checked the old ones and they are good as well.

Poxy thing usually did it just as I was entering a corner at over a 100mph :lol
Try the rechargeable battery pack or use the wired connection and see if it's the controller or not. Maybe check the battery connections. Also try brand new out of blister pack Duracell's. The controller is a high drain device so a battery tester will not help so much as it will only apply a small load for a short period of time.
Just ideas.
