If the brakes were locking he'd have difficulty pushing it - and wouldn't it still rev over the 10k anyway?

Do you think you might be having any issues with the clutch? My first Fazer 600 had a screwed clutch which only became apparant after a couple of rides and I got braver with the throttle (my first bike after DAS). Turned out the clutch plates were ker-knackered...
