I replied that as long as they gave me a receipt for it and accepted liability for any damage (considering that it is a life saving piece of equipment). They declined and just let me go.
A letter to head office in this instance is about the most you are going to be able to do, they may even send you a good-will voucher and have a quiet word with the shop manager. If that's what you're after then go for it, otherwise as mentioned - life's too short to worry about dickheads.
