It was early days then for the new Triumph company.
One reason they are a bit big and lardy was one of the main priorities for the new company was reliability.
While they had an iconic name in the bag, they knew that one whiff of unreliability and they would probably crash and burn, all those old British bike jokes would kill em off quick. So on the early bikes no chances were taken, everything is pretty much over engineered.
They also had to be modular. The new start needed to be able to present a range of bikes with the minimum of expense. So all the early 90's bikes are pretty much the same thing tweaked and remodelled.
