Hi, I am looking at a cheap '91 GSXR 1100, just like this one but it is too far from home to go just for a test ride. I love its looks and power numbers but I would like to know if it is really a fun ride or its heavy weight or something else make it less funny than a FZS 600. I am not even sure if I would sell the FZS after buying the GSXR, or I would keep it.
What do you think?

Its a bit old tech, and after riding a more modern bike with better suspension and brakes, I think you'll be a bit disappointed. It'll scare you to death I'm a straight line, then try and kill you on the corners. :lol
A mate of mine had one and his best analogy was "looks like a fish, goes like a fish, steers like a cow".
But have a go, you might like it.

HI,I AGREE WITH STEVIERST.IN MY TIME I HAVE HAD TWO OF THEM BUT P/X THEM FOR MORE MODERN STUFF.ONE FOR MY CURRENT BLADE AND THE OTHER FOR AN R1.THEY ARE NOW BECOMING A BIT OF A COLLECTORS ITEM.BALLISTIC IN A STRAIGHTLINE BUT A BIT OF A HANDFUL ON CORNERS.
.HAVE A GOOD RUN ON IT,ONE MORE THING THEY ARE F***ING HEAVY.THAT WAS A REASON FOR THE MODERN STUFF.

Yes, it is
There is a spanish magazine's test from that year, testing it with a Nitrous oxide system: 199HP at the back wheel :eek . Rest of the bike remained stock, except higher gearing, the engine seemed to endure the extra power very well, and the huge fairing hides the system perfectly :evil I do not know what to do.

I am thinking of keeping the FZS and buying the GSXR for crazy stuff and track days.

you'd be better off with the fazer for track days.
they (gsxr) are dinosaurs. lots of engine, nowhere near enough chassis. of that ilk the early exup was king, and by modern-ish standards they are beasts. if you want a track bike get a cbr600fm+ and go for it. a gsxr will bite your head off, shit down the stump and have sex with the rest of your family whilst your corpse is cooling :lol

hahaha it seems funny enough then :lol The fazer is not able to do proper track days. No matter how much the ground clearance has been increased, it keeps scratching everything. The old magazines said the GSXR has a very good ground clearance.

Plenty of sports 600's out there that would be much better fun, and eat the 1100 dino bike for breakfast on a track.

Might be the challenge the real fun? I do not mind to be slower than other people, but to enjoy the bike. I tried a YZF 1000 Thunderace before: very fast but too perfect, it didn't feel heavy as everybody said. It was boring, I didn't "feel" the speed.
On the other hand I do not understand the low tech reasons: fully adjustable USD forks, rear shock with reservoir tank, aluminum frame. Only the heavy air/oil cooled engine is lower tech than a FZS 600, but it is heavy duty, so no problem with it.
Plus if the dinobike ends overtaking contemporary bikes on track it will be funny as hell. If not, I do not care as long as I am having fun. The day before my first track day a CBR1000RR owner recommended me to not to go with this old Fazer, moreover with the road tyres it fitted. You can imagine what happened on the track. I was a lot faster than him, many overtakes, he went home at noon.

I would love one - it would have to be in the black and purple colour scheme though with purple wheels. It is the bike that got me into bikes in 1991 I was in France and went on the back of one, great machine, no shortage of character. Would have to a be second bike in my collection, to go with my K7.
I guess it is what it is - too much engine and weight in too little chassis (in comparison to most newer sports bikes) but if you can accept that it should be great for a blast.

I agree with you motorbreath, it'll certainly be a scream, and a challenge too if you can tweek the chassis for the track and blast past the newer machines, then every credit to ya and go for it.
Gotta admit, one of my favourite bikes for being a challenging ride was my old suzuki GS500! It was a proper basket case bike, but I sorted it out into a commuting carver, embarassing many a bigger bike in the town traffic. It just goes to show that its not what you've got, its how you ride it

do it. i bought a pop up katana as 'i always fancied one new'.
dear god what a terrible bike compared to modern kit, but it's different and in a quite insane way, fun to ride (by fun i mean that the frame is hinged so weaves above 70, the brakes are only fit for a moped and stephenson's rocket had better suspension, and the exhaust collector grounds out on right handers)
if only ......... are words i hate to hear!

Yes, my answers look like that but I am not really sure yet, sorry :o . But sometimes I just listen to all of you who say it handles like a cow and change my mind. I think the Katana has to be worse. I just hope the GSXR is not half as bad as the 1984 Yamaha FJ 1100 I have ridden a couple times -brakes? what is that? :eek That would be terrible. As I said, I have ridden a "heavy" Thunderace and I think it is a great bike. According with another track test the GSXR rode faster than the Ace- thanks mainly to its ground clearance. So it cannot be that bad, can it?
One positive thing is the fact that, as long as I own another modern bike, it falls into "classic vehicle" insurance (+20 years old: 50€) and on its 25th birthday it stops paying any taxes, just MOT every two years. I could even make money of it if I get bored and sell it.

You'll certainly get attention riding about on it.
Saw one parked up in town last year, it just looked massive, tall, fat with a monster fairing. Looks of people looking at it including me.
I do remember the bike mags slagging of one years version of it, apparently a bit of a hedge hopper. I think that year in the proddy TT, when basically the bikes were raced as they came out of the showroom, it was involved in a number of fatalities.
Yeah you might want to do a bit of chassis and suspension work on it if you do go for it. If it's in reasonably good nick and you keep it nice it's only gonna increase in value.
But I know what you mean about the fun factor. I test rode a lightly used Triumph Daytona in the mid 90's, I had it for the best part of a day. I just loved it, the engine the size of the thing etc. I didn't buy it though, I didn't feel confident enougth back then with all that weight and that I was on my tip toes at a standstill. I bought a CBR600 instead, better handling, faster but just didn't quite make you feel the king of the road that the Daytona did. Maybe if I ever get that old garage of mine fully sorted out I might see if I can get hold of an early 90's Speed Triple 900.

I suppose that getting attention that way is not a good think, it seems like most people was looking at a very obese person. :\ But it doen't matter.

I had never heard of those older triples, they are beautiful!

The old Speed Triple is the same bike as the Daytona, just the Daytona has the barn door fairing.
I think the Daytona still looks cool in a kind dated way, but the speed triple has a certain almost timeless look to it.
A lot of Daytona's have become speed triples, and I've seen plenty of Tridents and Sprints trying to pass themselves off as Speed Triples too.
It's all wrong of course, trying to be a cafe racer with a big water cooled lump and spine frame. But I think it looks great. I just hope they ride as well as I remember.

Oh there's a 150bhp Daytona 1200, that might tickle yer fancy. There's was a 120bhp gentleman's agreement that nobody would import a bike with more than 120bhp. Triumph decided that as they were making em here, well such nonsense didn't apply to them, so hence the monster 4 cylinder 150bhp Daytona 1200
