Personally, I thought it a very reasonable question which you had every right to ask. 
I suspect that you and I share the same concerns about machining tolerances. It's asking a lot to produce an extender which is just a hair oversize to take a mass produced fork leg without having the two parts in the same workshop to check.
Filling the gap with WD40 is - to my mind - like the oil between conrod main bearing surfaces. It will squeeze and displace when subject to pressure. The amount of flex in the fork unit may be tiny but it will be there.
