R1 front take2 - tommyteeman - 29-11-12 Ok...so this is another r1 front end conversion, nothing new really :rolleyes but thought i'd post up pics of the fz1 tope yoke mod supplied by devilsyam, fits str8 on with no issues and totally solves the problem of the front being too low. Forks/yoke and spindle from an 03 bike. I'll run with this for a bit unless an '07 on set of forks/calipers appears ! ![]() ![]() ![]() Re: R1 front take2 - sadlonelygit - 29-11-12 a couple of questions here. how are the extensions secured to the fork leg? how do you adjust preload/rebound? Re: R1 front take2 - tommyteeman - 29-11-12 extenders are machined to be a perfect fit, when you fit them you spray wd40 or similar onto the fork leg and slide them on, this causes a hydrolic lock and they cant be removed unless heated up. The tops are caps and simply remove to adjust settings. The top clamp will work with 03 bikes and 07 on bikes as they use the same offset, 25mm, earlier yokes are 35mm and the 04-06 are 30mm, heres a handy table i nicked from the usa site, cant rememer who posted it but good work. ![]() Re: R1 front take2 - devilsyam - 29-11-12 looking good tommy - the top caps are my frame plugs and are a simple push fit so access is easy i did quite a bit research into these to make them right biggest issue is people rushing and fitting them to the legs and not thinking that they wont go through the bottom yoke lol another problem is the gold as when i had a set anodized it dont match the legs at all - i can do black anodised extenders so my advice is get black legs if possable Re: R1 front take2 - ogri48 - 29-11-12 pukka blokes, nice work and nice engineering ![]() ![]() Re: R1 front take2 - flyboy - 29-11-12 Can I ask a question with regards the fit of the extenders over the fork legs Tommy states that they are a perfect fit over the leg. I would coming from a engineering back ground question what the fit is if the leg slides into the extenders it has to be a clearance fit thus free to move and fret. As I see it over time with braking, forks flexing, etc the clearance will only go one way greater. I'm not trying to put this idea down and I appreciate that lot of you are happy with the set up, but for me it would be a no go. Re: R1 front take2 - devilsyam - 29-11-12 choice is yours but i consulted harris, and sweary bob you do not know the layout of these extenders to comment but i accept you point no one is forcing you at all im used to objectors hell i was the first to be flamed in 2003 for fitting r1 forks now tiz common place i'm no engineer i bash wood for a living that doesnt mean i dont do my home work - i have done more to fazers than anyone period i continue to push the envelope on this bike so in response so we understand each other wot you do go on amaze me :lol Re: R1 front take2 - flyboy - 29-11-12 Woha I'm not flaming any one, I just asked a question regarding the sizing of the adaptors if Harris an sweaty Bob say alls good who am I to argue. I would still like to know the sizing of the parts though just out of interest. Perhaps I should kept " for me it would be a no go" to myself no offence intended . what do i do ? nowt special have a little CNC based sub/con shop Re: R1 front take2 - Falcon 269 - 30-11-12 Personally, I thought it a very reasonable question which you had every right to ask. ![]() I suspect that you and I share the same concerns about machining tolerances. It's asking a lot to produce an extender which is just a hair oversize to take a mass produced fork leg without having the two parts in the same workshop to check. Filling the gap with WD40 is - to my mind - like the oil between conrod main bearing surfaces. It will squeeze and displace when subject to pressure. The amount of flex in the fork unit may be tiny but it will be there. OK on a chopper but not on my Fazer, thanks. ![]() Re: R1 front take2 - devilsyam - 30-11-12 Ok what ever Re: R1 front take2 - tommyteeman - 30-11-12 'spose we're talking in a perfect world here, there maybe the tiniest bit of movement but I cant see how that will make any difference, when you fit the extenders they dont drop on and rattle about, my pics make the extenders look as they are too big but the top of the fork increases in diameter just inside the bottom of the extender, the forks will more than likely move in the clamps too as they cant be a perfect fit either but that never worried me. I think the point is the forks arn't going anywhere. I am 100% happy with the way this is fitted, if your happy with using a drilled out r1 top clamp and a low bike then theres no need for this mod anyway Re: R1 front take2 - Falcon 269 - 30-11-12 The fork legs won't move in the standard upper or lower clamps because they're gripped firmly by the pinch bolt. My reservation over this design is that the lower clamp alone could be subjected to stress caused by any movement occurring between the top of the fork leg and the extender. It may not be much (if any ... ), it may not be significant but I don't like the thought if the lower clamp having flex stress applied to it. To my way of thinking, the manufacturers fit upper and lower clamps with pinch bolts for a reason and it's not because they look nice. Obviously Sweary Dave and Devilsyam hold a different opinion but that's OK ... there's no rule here which says we all have to agree on everything. ![]() Re: R1 front take2 - dazza - 30-11-12 (29-11-12, 09:23 PM)devilsyam link Wrote: - i have done more to fazers than anyone period Re: R1 front take2 - jackojet - 30-11-12 Would a solution be to cut a thread into extender and fork leg and then screw the two together? There must be sufficient thickness in the leg as the fork caps are held in by a thread inside the leg. Then the top and bottom clamps would hold them in place so no twisting? Just an idea ![]() Re: R1 front take2 - Falcon 269 - 30-11-12 Possibly, Jacko, but it would add a lot of complexity to the machining process where evidently the idea here is to keep it simple and thus less expensive. ![]() Re: R1 front take2 - tommyteeman - 30-11-12 the other method would be to use extended caps like race teams do, pretty sure the likes of ohlins produce them. Or custom top clamp. I'd think there would have to be some major movement going on to stress the bottom clamp enough to cause a problem. The problem could even be that the length of the extender could result in less flexing of the fork as the top and bottom yokes twist under normal conditions....or just get a set of fz1 forks and fit them...bit thin on the ground tho. Its all good fun and keeps the interest going which is the main thing..... Re: R1 front take2 - Kosmic Kartman - 30-11-12 Just can't seem to get my head around a few things here. Firstly. Why fit shorter USD forks and then use the extender to raise the front end back up to standard right hight? If it was for better suspension is there not a cheaper option of switching/upgrading for internals. Surely the idea of going to R1 forks is to lower the front end and make it more reactive, sharper with stiffer handling. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Secondly. Loose, nice, tight or interference fit I don't think WD40 is the right sort of chemical compound to be spraying on a sleeve that I want not to move. Glue would be better imo. Might an idea be to to run a slot halfway up the lenght of the extender and then to clamp it, maybe by using something like one half of a fork brace. Just a thought. Jubilee clamp for a buget option. Out of interest do Harris (Obviously Bob's not with us any more) give any specs with regard to movement or clearance, or are they rock solid? I remember when I was at school I used something called a Zeus data charts for working out calculations. Still struggle to get my head round it. As for mass produced stuff. I PDI over 100 arborist machines a week and recently had to return an engine from a mower that was going to shake it's self to bits. On closer inspection it turned out that the hole drilled and machined in the end of the crankshaft that the clucth and cutter blade bolts to was not only off centre but slightly out of square. I thought it was a bent crank at first We sent the motor back to Briggs and they say they've looked and there's nothing wrong with it. I bet they didn't even screw a bolt in the crank and turn it over. Now I'm starting to ramble so I'm gonna go and build a bling fitted kitchen for Emma's Dolls house. Re: R1 front take2 - devilsyam - 30-11-12 so on it go's :lol adrian i for one have never like the nose down stance when just fitting the r1 legs. personal choice my extenders still allow for 10mm of fork drop over stock should you require it you can all ponder and debate as much as you like. i have done me home work i am happy with it and so are the people i supply once fitted there is no movment there is 60mm over the joint with a 8mm wall made from aircraft spec ally unlike the threaded version were only 12-15mm of thread locates into the fork on fork extensions i am not going into full specs as im fed up of people nicking me idea's you either like it or not. free world. free speech. but please dont insult me dont need that nor would anyone else to be fair i should just let the comments slide life to short been there Re: R1 front take2 - Falcon 269 - 30-11-12 No-one is nicking your idea here, Luke ... it's been done already (unless this is your business in another guise, of course ![]() http://www.billetbikebits.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_16&products_id=86 No-one is insulting you, either, unless you consider it insulting to be asked reasonable questions or have different views expressed. As for letting questions or comments slide by, that risks giving the wrong impression, too. Let's be honest, mate, you post up all your mods to get attention and approval. If you put something into the public domain, you have to expect the occasional bit of contrary feedback. You can't have a constant diet of ooohs and aaahs all the time ![]() Re: R1 front take2 - tommyteeman - 30-11-12 me....i just like the usd look over the std jobbies........"i bet you think this song is about you...dont you....dont you" lol |
