The ins. company don't seem fussed whether it's been "written off" previously or not. Just wait 'til there's a claim & they'll be looking for any excuse not to pay out!
If it's insurable, it seems like sense to repair whatever needs doing, making sure there are no freaky hidden cracks (in the frame) while I'm doing so and then use it.
as an aside, I've found that many "salesmen" are only just ahead of you when reading the details off the info card of the product you're trying to buy!
