putting a written off bike back on the road - Muddi Camel - 25-11-12

Just wondering about the ramifications of putting a bike back on the road that's had a payout.

I've just bought it & it's "cosmetically challenged", but sound, intact, low mileage with a good history.

the previous owner had a payout when a moped went into the LHR corner and there's quite a bit of broken or scuffed plastic but it's otherwise good.  His insurance company said they were going to write it off over the phone, but he never heard any more about that.  He never had to hand over the V5 and has only just retaxed it online.
DVLA website doesn't show any markers against it. I've not done an HPI check and wondering if it's worth it.

If it has been "written off" - what's the problem about putting it back on the road?    I could break it for spares, but that would be a shame.

Thanks in advance

Mopeds are very prone to bent bottom yokes in the event of a mild incident.
Well worth having the front end out to check.
Re putting it back on the road. Cat d is not even an issue. Cat c requires another mot to ensure it's roadworthy after any repairs.
Any other cat of damage is not allowed back on the road.

I'm not really fussed about the 'ped.

I'm guessing that as the prev. owner was able to tax online, the MOT is still valid.  I suppose I should check that on the VOSA Site.

the Bike's got ABS, so I really don't want to break it if I don't need to.

Might find that helpful explaining the different groups if you know which category it came under.

bitten the bullet.
It's a Cat D write off.

If I replace the plastics (I only need to do a couple - the rest are the other bikes paint that will polish off)
  - can I return it to the road?

do I need to notify anyone?  Does it need to be inspected?

I imagine it'll affect the resale value in due course - if it ever gets sold - but by how much?

Thanks

Nowt wring with cat D's. I'm selling one at the moment, and owned 3 others. As long as they're rebuilt properly then there's no problem. The resale value is effected, and dealers hate them enough to offer 1/2 book price on a trade in. Unless you get it for absolute peanuts, and have the skills to rebuild it, don't buy it to sell. You probably won't make any money on it.  :\ If you have it to ride, then I wish you years of happy motoring on it. No-one else need to know its a cat D  Big Grin

Cat D needs no notification to anyone apart from your insurance co failure to inform them even tho they will not ask you as its your responsibility to tell them will mean in the event of an accident they may not pay you out ! As not all insurance co will take em, Also dealers won't have vehicles on hpi as they can't finance them, but don't be alarmed cat d do make perfect buys if it had been cat c I would have avoided it.

Also on new cars/vehicles most insurance co will stipulate for the 1st 12 months from new if the vehicle is damaged they will replace the vehicle like for like that's why there are lots of cat d vehicles, we have 2 vehicles both reg on hpi as cat d one is a john cooper special Mini Cooper s, a bird hit the pavement in a skid and it popped the air bag it's worth more now than when we brought it 10 years ago and its still only got 15k on the clock its minta than mint and I've got a 1year old Vw that cost nearly 30k, wing and bonnet was damaged when 6 months old and as it was on Vw finance they just replaced the vehicle it's totally madness and it was than repaired by Vw approved body shop and they stuck a cat d on it, my last astra sportive van was cat d and it was written off by a 3rd party in feb this year the 3rd parties insurance co offered me more than I paid for it, but like I state above I make sure I tell my insurance co that's its a cat d otherwise you run the risk of not being paid regardless.

Re: putting a written off bike back on the road - Muddi Camel - 25-11-12

It's only superficial plastic - most of which I've got as spares anyway.
The only thing that's not so good on it - the prev. owner scothlock'd a day running light onto the front.

It would be good to keep it.  Cost peanuts, only had to push it home.  I guess it might be sensible to find if the insurer will cover it!

Thanks for the help.

Re: putting a written off bike back on the road - ghostbiker - 25-11-12

My gen 1 1000 was a write off 6 months ago. Nothing wrong other than a couple of minor scrapes. I did replace the bars but that's about it.

My original insurance company would not insure the bike affter the crash. So I had to change. This ment my.premium went up well over double even though it was not my fault and I still had my no claims.
The only thing the insurance co wanted was a fresh mot

errr...no such thing Wink
cat d is purely that it's been recorded as having a claim on the insurers database

good luck with it

Re: putting a written off bike back on the road - Muddi Camel - 26-11-12

Thanks for the help so far.

The ins. company don't seem fussed whether it's been "written off" previously or not.  Just wait 'til there's a claim & they'll be looking for any excuse not to pay out!

If it's insurable, it seems like sense to repair whatever needs doing, making sure there are no freaky hidden cracks (in the frame) while I'm doing so and then use it.

as an aside, I've found that many "salesmen" are only just ahead of you when reading the details off the info card of the product you're trying to buy!
