Just use a switched live off straight off the fuse box.

I added some pics that show how to pick up the switched live. These are of my 2004 gen1 thou, but I'm guessing all the fuse boxes are probably similar if not the same.
I did find my original controller needed some revs when the bike was cold to stay on. The second controller I've fitted, after the first failed after a few years use, powers up on a cold tickover no probs.
I personally wouldn't wire them off anything else. It's the correct way to do it, butchering wires and no overloading any circuit. And it's easy.
