Hi Boxer , don't rely on the dealer checking it, its not in the Yamaha service schedule, been some horror storys of dealers foccin charging daft prices for sorting seized exup valves!
If you haven't got the 7k error code, its good start. Have good look at the bolts on the housing, see if they are rusted, if so proceed with caution. If you can get the cover off then you can check working of the valve and cables. Use some penetrating fluid to soak before undoing anything.
Servicing the exup is easy once you can undo bolts. This should be done every service for a trouble free life. There is in depth guide on Pat's motorcycle page.
