I signed a guarantor agreement for my niece's accommodation in Portsmouth a couple of months back. The letting agent initially tried to enforce the same deal, but after a discussion went back to the landlord and the clause was dropped.
So, unless you know the parents of the students she'll be sharing with, I'd say go back to the letting agent and argue.
