Any Landlords on here? Student accommodation. - dickturpin - 26-05-12 My DD has the chance of sharing a flat for her college days and we are being told we need to sign as guarantor for her. That's fine. What worries me is the terms 'joint and several' in the tenancy agreement. That means if any of the three occupants fail to keep up with the rent we can be liable for it all. The estate agency says that all the tenancies are done this way! Happy (ish) to be guarantor for DD but for others as well? Suggestions please.... :grumble Re: Any Landlords on here? Student accommodation. - Tiberius Onklevaart - 26-05-12 1 bedroom flat or a bedsit. Or halls Re: Any Landlords on here? Student accommodation. - Tiberius Onklevaart - 26-05-12 Although, not all tenancy agreements are like that up here. I don't know how it works in the south. It depends on the agency from any that i've dealt with in Glasgow. Or go private. Re: Any Landlords on here? Student accommodation. - dickturpin - 26-05-12 3 bed flat through a letting agent. Re: Any Landlords on here? Student accommodation. - Fazerider - 26-05-12 I signed a guarantor agreement for my niece's accommodation in Portsmouth a couple of months back. The letting agent initially tried to enforce the same deal, but after a discussion went back to the landlord and the clause was dropped. So, unless you know the parents of the students she'll be sharing with, I'd say go back to the letting agent and argue. "They're all like that, Sir" shouldn't go unchallenged... they're not. Re: Any Landlords on here? Student accommodation. - Hodge - 26-05-12 We were guarantors for our son and it was only for him. Tell the agency/landlord the terms are unacceptable and will not stand up in a court of law. You are not responsible for the other housemates. Re: Any Landlords on here? Student accommodation. - goldfazer - 27-05-12 I'm with Hodge - jointly and severaly is fine if it's only her, not the other reprobates she's sharing with! Speaking as a landlord, an offer to pay xx months up front and no guarantor may help. |
