To add what Mike and Luke said. I use a shallow wooden wedge and pop that under the tyre. It's a good easy way to get everything lined up when refitting the dog bones. you can do this by moving the wegde backwards and forwards. It also takes the wieght of the wheel when you take the bolts out.
When spannering on the suspension linkage tie the bike down or stick large heavy bricks in front of the wheels (I use two bits of railway track) to stop the bike rolling of the centre stand. If it fell on you it would hurt... a lot.
