dogbone removel - kerb - 10-02-12 hi all i just got my first fazer tho 2003 model so my first question is the previous owner was a bit shorter than me and he had fitted shorter dog bones i have the orignal dogbones and want to fit them do i remove old ones and refit orignal ones the thing that confuses me is that theres only about 5 mm diff in dogbones cheers Re: dogbone removel - kerb - 10-02-12 oh and is it just a matter of removing the nuts at side of suspesion linkage and then remove bolts and then remove dogdone and then fit orignal dog dones and refit bolts and nuts Re: dogbone removel - devilsyam - 10-02-12 shorter bones means taller not lower? Make sure you've got the bike steady and secure. When you undo the dogbones, the rear wheel will drop unless supported. It would be a good idea to give the whole suspension linkage system a good clean, inspection and re-grease while you're at it. ![]() Re: dogbone removel - Kosmic Kartman - 11-02-12 To add what Mike and Luke said. I use a shallow wooden wedge and pop that under the tyre. It's a good easy way to get everything lined up when refitting the dog bones. you can do this by moving the wegde backwards and forwards. It also takes the wieght of the wheel when you take the bolts out. When spannering on the suspension linkage tie the bike down or stick large heavy bricks in front of the wheels (I use two bits of railway track) to stop the bike rolling of the centre stand. If it fell on you it would hurt... a lot. Re: dogbone removel - ghostbiker - 11-02-12 The wedge is a good tip, I use a door wedge from a hardware shop. Think it cost me 50 p but is plastic. A wood one would be better. Also remember to torque the bolts on rebuild. Pats site is a big help here but I am on phone so can't link it. As said shorter bones increase hight. So don't panic when you take old ones off and they are actually longer LOL. 5mm gives a much bigger adjustment at seat hight than at dog bone level. But that said it isn't a HUGE diff. At least I didn't think so when I went from std to shorter bones....... Raised the back. I would highly reccomend fitting shorter than standard dogbones (jack-up kit) as available on ebay for about £15 if you're not overly short of leg. This puts more weight on the front and makes the bike a lot more responsive through corners, dropping the front forks through the yokes by 10mm is also another easy mod that has similar results. When fitting your new bones I beleive it is best to re-assemble everything with the bike on the centre-stand but to do the final tightening of the linkage bolts on the side stand as this helps eliminate some of the play in the linkage that is common on GEN1 Fazers. It's not exactlty linear, and a few thousandths error shouldn't hurt. There's that much slop in the bolts size to hole size already. it doesn't require much precision. Here's some figures based on several postings of measurements made to raise and lower FZ1's.
