Has anyone polished the collector?

Glad you picked up on that NORTHWESTERN....I cleaned it up and was going to paint it silver, always though it looked wrong unpainted  and untidy....might go back to it another day

When I put my Akra silencer + link pipe on it needed some loops welding on the collector side for the springs (the link pipe was a race Ti one for an R1), I knocked off the surface dirt etc with a sanding disk and it was bright and shiney, I always wondered if anyone had taken the time to polish it all up.

It always amazed me that Yamaha didn't add a little screw on chromed cover either side to hide the bare metal? I suppose that would just be another thing with Cheese bolts the 2nd or 3rd owner would have to sort out before sorting the seized EXUP bolts.

Out with my son yesterday on our push bikes.a great day spent at bracknel forest  :thumbup....got back early evening and straight out to the garage, fitted the rad, front forks, mudguard and brake calipers, up at 6 this morning and fitted all the little bits and pieces and filled the coolant system, pushed the starter and started instantly.  .........let it run up to temperature and checked for leaks both oil and water, all good.....5 mins on the PC and its taxed, iam off   


I also replaced the fork seals and oil and could feel the difference instantly, well worth doing if not been done for a while.stopped after about 5 miles and gave the bike a quick check over, oil, water etc, all good so I head out towards oxford and drop into 'H's cafe at dorchester for brekkie, about 100 miles this morning in brillant sunshine and thd bike ran well, stopped at wallingford for ice cream and piccies....happy with the results, but it has made other bits and pieces look a bit shabby  :rolleyes

Thank you UNFAZED  ........such a nice day I went out again this afternoon, just up to the ace cafe for tea, about 25 miles, got off the bike and I had a little trickle of coolant running off the bottom of the front sprocket cover, could'nt see where it was coming from and no tools to get the cover off, stopped after a couple of minutes so I bought a bottle of water and took it easy on the way home stopping and checking the level every few miles, got home ok, took the sprocket cover off and moved the hoses about a bit and got sprayed with coolant from the hose that runs from the union to the left of the front sprocket to the back of the cylinder barrels, I must have trapped it when fitting the cover  :o.......

small picky point even though the job is brill no way would i have put them exhaust nuts back on id gotten some stainless uns just my thought

Well spotted devilsyam.i bought some stainless domed nuts, went to fit them but were too shallow, hitting the inside of the dome before being tight on the exhaust flange, should have checked size before buying  :o....might remove the exhaust to paint the collector box, if I do I'll get the correct nuts and fit them then...

If the nut is too shallow could you put a washer or two behind them?

Engine does look smart though. Mine has one or two little marks but not enough to make me repaint it but you've shown what can be done.

Seams to be a common problem on the silver engines...took me longer than expected but had to be done...if yours is not too bad how about touching it up with a small brush ?

Touch up would probably do, your colour match looks good do you think spraying a bit into the lid and then a small brush is viable.

Yeh, I think that would do it, ive got a couple of small chips to do and plan to paint them this way...ive used hycote paint, the match is good but its a bit too matt, ive also used simoniz on other projects and this has more of a sparkle to it, think this would be a better match for the fazer....

Hi paul....as with most piccies on the interweb, bike is not as clean as images imply...bike has seen many winters and some of the alloy components are pitted, paint on the wheels is flaking as well, my next job  ....got it cheap though, bought to ride not repair, had two summers on it so far and its ready for this years fun.....boob jobbie booked for end of month...cant wait  :lol
