Being naughty as this has nothing to do with my fazer thou, but my gsxr 750 'slabside' I have recently replaced the starter, ultrasonically cleaned the carbs, replaced the float needle valves and the bike still leaks fuel if fuel tap left on. Next issue is if i leave fuel tap on it lets fuel into the combustion chamber if left overnight, which causes a hydraulic lock - this was the reason i got a new starter, as i thought it was knackered. funnily enough it was pretty goosed, as the fuel leak ran onto the starter and removed the internal grease . Anyway does anyone know why it is letting fuel into combustion chamber? I know if i turn the fuel tap off i will have both issues sorted, but i owned this bike 8 years ago and never needed to turn tap off..
Ps... Fazer has been rebuilt after accident and has been in use for last few months
cheers nick it helps in some ways... In america they have vacuum taps, but uk bikes have on/off taps, so it's not a petcock issue. There is no fuel in the oil... yet. I thought if i replaced the float needle valves it would stop fuel escaping down the throttle bodies into combustion chambers
How about the floats themselves? It has to be a failure to seal at the float needle seat, or around the seat (O-rings) or else something preventing the float from applying enough upward pressure to seat the needle firmly in the valve seat.
You may have a bit of light corrosion at the seat where the needle seals which a quick scrape with an instrument size screwdriver or similar and a blast from the air gun will clear.
I am assuming you have tested the floats for leakage and that you have correctly set the float heights here mind.
since the petrol only has one route into to the carburettor, only two things can really cause this.
The Float and the Needle valve assembly.
Exam Questions? :lol
Is the float floating?
Is the float sticking?
Is the float height set correctly?
Is the needle valve worn?
Is the needle valve seat worn?
Is the needle valve seat seal worn/perished?
Answer yes to any of the above and there is your problem :eek
The float seat may be worn, but it seems to seal when tested. The strange thing is when you touch the bottom of the drain hole in the carb it's like you are releasing pressure because there may not be any fuel leaking, but the minute you touch the drain hole ' with the screw still closed' it lets fuel out.. :wall
Can you fit a clear tube to the drain hole and tape it up to the side and watch what is happening.
I have found that that the only way to solve something like this is to replace the complete valve assembly, Seat, Seal and Needle. Are they still available for this great machine ? Maybe not from suzuki but from either Mikuni or Kehin, not sure what type you have as both makes were used over the years.
Original Exhaust are hard to come by for these now.
I have previously done the tube up the side, which shows the level the fuel sits in the float bowl. The carbs are the uk version 29mm semi flat slides. I replaced seal and needle, but not seats, so it's probably them that are causing an issue. I replaced the exhaust years ago with a full stainless micron system. When i went to have it set up on the dyno we couldn't get it to run right no matter what jet kit or needles we used. Ended up cutting open the system and removing an internal baffle just where the downpipes go from 4 into 1. Set up after that was straightforward I still have the dyno read out..98 hp at rear wheel. Doubt it still puts that out now :\ This bike i bought in 1992 with 12000 miles it was mint. I used it for 12 years and sold it to my mate when it was still mint. He used it for 8 years but totally neglected it. He even drove it to Africa! Bought it back last month and replaced fork seals, starter, rear tyre, regreased suspension bushes, repainted 'cheap as chips', stripped carbs and ultrasonically cleaned them, stripped and bled brakes and fitted new seals. Plus loads more....Costing a fortune :'( Here is a recent pic... I have since added bullet hole stickers :lol 99p This paint job is temporary.. any suggestions to the colour i should paint it?
Most likely the seat if the rest was replaced. They would have worn to suit the needles, which is why I always put back the needles into the seat they came from when stripping carburettors.
Suitable colour for parts of Africa
Why not go back to the original colours? From the picture the roling chassis looks in excelent condition.
Notice you have a Tuono, what is it like? I have a 2004 RSV R belonging to a friend in the garage at present, he wants me to set the suspension up for Irish road use. Very different to the set up required for motorway and primary routes.
It was black when it went to Africa. I bought a couple of cans of green & brown paint and did it all in a day . My tuono v4 is utterly bonkers! Brilliant bike, which handles and goes like no other bike i have owned. Really pleased i bought one. Still have my gen 1 fazer thou, as it's the best all rounder you can get.
Looks cool though.
I have both the FZS600 and FZS1000, Definitely great all rounders, but could not really seperate one from the other as to which is very best.
The red one in the pic was mine, before Suzuki did it in these colours (Dream Machine paint job). I loved this colour and still do.
Had a full system by Pete Gibson, direct copy of Yoshi works exhaust from the time (1986) foc it was loud, open carbs and upjetted on the mains only (got the jet sizes from an article in Superbike Magazine who got them from Mick Grant's Superstocker - no chance I can remember what size they were) - it went like a b*****d!
Tried NRP for carb repair kits, O-rings etc but they don't list any for this model. Could be worth calling them anyway if you need carb spares. Used to find them really helpful when I worked parts in bike shops.
I got float bowl gaskets from nrp. I have used them many times, as they always have what i'm after. I think red/black might be an option. Probably all red and fit gsxr graphics in black.
Used to use them at Waltham Cross m/cs, as we did work on quite a lot of older bikes. Didn't know any of the guys by name, but delivered the goods on a number of occasions for us.
I think i will just turn the fuel off instead of removing carbs and stripping them again, as i'm using my fazer for work 5 days a week and the tax runs out at end of month. I have to tax and insure the gsxr at the end of this month, so fazer can be cleaned and put away for winter alongside the tuono v4. Winters are lo...ng in Scotland. I would add the gsxr to my multi bike policy, but hastings direct multi bike policy is a total rip off, as they only allow a maximum of two bikes :eek , so will have to insure it seperately :'(
