Only done it the once - with a morgan carbtune. And it was pain free (ish) other than finding the screws. Can recommend.

Yep I can recommend the Morgan's carb tune, I too was a newbie to balancing my carbs 1st time I'd say took me 1hr to get it right now I can do it in about 15-20 mins I still use a very small pencil torch to see the screws as there buggers to see.

i use four gauges.....before i start i calibrate them by connecting to the same carb in turn and take note of the reading then adjust my final reading....it is possible too adjust them but very fiddily......get good results

Used both gauges and carbtune over the years both work ok. I have a carbtune now and the hardest thing is finding the adjusting screws.

I've done this a couple of times and I've always found it an easy job, with a Morgan carbtune.
My only question is, the guide on this site shows to balance them at idle, adjust the screws, give a little rest and take the reading at idle. But, when I then hold the revs up, say about 5k (riding revs) the carb tune is all over the place, so should we also be balancing at higher revs or is balancing at idle totally correct?

You do it at idle, have a look on you tube there plenty DIY on there and I found one chap doing a fazer

There should be some kind of Carbtune timeshare scheme....I'd happily give a fiver to use one for an hour every 6,000 miles.

Looks like there's not much in it then.
Is the Carbtune a digital display, or is it liquid filled tubes? I've not been able to tell from the pics/videos I've seen.

It's neither Jamie, they are stainless rods with a graph on the background to set up so that all the rods align within the same markings, very easy to do you even get a idiot proof manual.

Hmmm not sure it's an idiot proof manual I've heard of people trying to use them without fitting the inline restrictor.very erratic readings I understand......
