When I trained as a nurse some 30 years ago it was fine to call these places "loony bins" or "nuthouses". Nowadays they'reĀ referred to as "mental health units" or "psychiatric care facilities". I tell you - it's madness gone politically correct! (geddit?) :b
I'll get me coat....
Many years ago, while I was a computer field engineer, one of my customers was a health authority. One of the sites I went to on a semi-regular basis was one of these institutions. Used to scare the crap out of me sometimes. I would be walking round the site with a suitcase full of sharp tools and none of the staff wore uniforms (so as to not upset their guests) so it made it impossible for me to work out who was who. It was even worse in the secure unit they had on site.
I am not sure if those places were the worst though. We also looked after HMP so I went to just about all of the prisons in Kent, Surrey and Sussex. Some of them were scary!
