Sorry brake pads!!

Ok about to pull mine out and check them, might not have been inspected for 3 years gulp.


I've checked through the other topics and am now throughly confused.
My disc's are original so what are the best pads to get?? Whats the difference between sintered/organic? Are EBC/ Gulfer/ SBS a make? Race or road?
I don't ride hard or on track but would like to know that i have good anchors.
Please help in very simple language with perhaps a link to the pads you use.

Sintered pads usually offer better feel but at a cost, wearing the discs quicker. IMO they're still worth it tho.

Although there's plenty of other decent brands, the most popular pads for 600 (and 1000) owners appear to be EBC HH & SBS sintered (I've used SBS Street Excel - very nice). The others you mentioned may be better but are usually more £££

There are a lot of variables on this topic.
I have wavy aftermarket discs up front and my Galfer sintered pads are barely wearing at all, and are hardly scratching the surface of the discs either, it's a perfect scenario.
I've just tried SBS ceramics on the rear and after a couple of weeks of bedding in i'm very impressed by the pinpoint accuracy of braking when used in traffic, they are very responsive and bite well.
I would avoid sintered on the rear, as they are a bit harsh.
If you're interested in the Galfers they are much cheaper from Calsports site on Ebay, rather than their normal website.
I would be bold enough to say that this combination of pads is the best i've ever had in years of biking.

Further more i have removed the rear pads, how do i know if they are worn, they are EBC FA104's theres no groove down the middle, theres about 5mm of raised material from the metal plate with what look like a plastic/paint layer covering the edge of raised material, is this all friction material or is this layer around the edge warning me it needs replacing.

I think If there isn't a groove down the middle then A) it's worn away or B) some pads have a notch out of one of the corners which is the marker instead of the groove.

I know Darrsi, assuming that the 5mm is actual friction material.
I'm going to the steelers tomorrow to look at a new set and compare.
Its all very confusing and worrying, I have found out that they are organic pads, so something learnt.

I have just ordered by new pads and have a set of EBC FA104's in their packaging - there is NO GROOVE on these pads down the middle so it isn't a sign that they are worn. 5mm of pad is loads of life left - my brand new ones are maybe 8mm thick? Basically, if there isn't any material left bar metal then you need to replace them, otherwise you are fine (unless your brakes feel off / bad / crap :P)

Going back to the original post quickly;
EBC, SBS, Galfer etc are manufacturers

- Sintered brakes have the best braking performance with minimal brake dust, but tend to chew up discs more than other types
- Ceramic pads trade off braking performance (more so when they are cold) for not destroying your discs and causes a little (minuscule amounts really) more brake dust than Sintered
- Organic pads are softer so chew your discs the least but don't have the sort of performance as the others. They also tend to produce a lot of brake dust but the braking is more progressive and less bitey / snatchy

So, I have Organic pads on the rear (I like the feel of them) and Ceramics up front

Skippernick,- Have just fitted Goodridge braided brake lines to my 03 FZS 600 as original rubber lines were 10 years old (Yamaha recommend changing hoses every 4 yrs)
I ordered a 2-line front (Race) set up: Goodridge ref no YA0613-2FC
and single line rear: -ref   no   YAO613-1RC 
These are the correct replacements for Fazer FZS 600 98-03
They come with all banjo bolts & crush washers. ordered via M&P Direct(Swansea) ' cost inc P&P of  £82-18.
All fitted bled & tested Saturday in under 2hours ( including time to split clean check & reassemble rear caliper as pistons were "sticky" Job done-sorted!

By the way pulled out the front pads and they are Sumitomo pads, i am assuming these are the original ones, so goes to show i and previous owner really are gentle on the brakes. Mind you i am of the philosophy of slow in fast out.

Incidentally I don't wear brakepads out as  the thou has stonking engine breaking which, if you are thinking well ahead, rules out the need for a lot of the braking to slow. Same with the 600-good standard fitment front brakes & adequate rear. Have decided to leave some of the service jobs til autumn/winter ie brake master cylinder overhaul kits, rear susp/pivot bearings, swingarm strip & grease. Ought to check valve clearances though as 34500 on odo. Slow in ...Fast out .... love it!

Incidentally I don't wear brakepads out as  the thou has stonking engine breaking which, if you are thinking well ahead, rules out the need for a lot of the braking to slow. Same with the 600-good standard fitment front brakes & adequate rear. Have decided to leave some of the service jobs til autumn/winter ie brake master cylinder overhaul kits, rear susp/pivot bearings, swingarm strip & grease. Weird Punkstig i've never noticed a loss of performance in mine wet or dry, but like dave says i use engine breaking and light on the breaks probably won't effect it that much.

HEL braided lines £59.99 delivered. I had these on my CBR6 and they were fantastic, Will be upgrading on my 03 fazer soon. And you can have any colour of line, and any colour banjo fittings. Plus a rear too for only £30.00 more.

Just thought I'd let everyone know. (I don't work for HEL by the way, just like saving a few quid, and they aren't an inferior product.)

Re brake piston seals. Have tried pattern parts, which can be "hit & miss" regards fit -however Yamaha really take the p**s with their prices. Cost me £85-03 just for the F & R master cylinder overhaul kits(Yamaha) & a further £32-47 for Nikone(pattern) seals from Cardiff M/Cs. Can understand Yamaha profiteering from accessories but for basic safety items its scandalous!   So when I have to buy brake parts for the cage it seems like an absolute bargain!

Bugger, did the goodridge ones come with pu sleeving and stainless fittings as standard, as a mate of mine ordered them and had to pay more for the ends and sleeve. That's why I got to HEL ones as at the time, all were included.

EDIT: - Looks like you either get a 3 line setup or use a double banjo bolt - good old search.
