Lambs... no seriously... lambs
« on: 07 February 2013, 05:47:30 pm »
At this time of year I'm always on the lookout for the first lambs and daffodils of the year. Kind of a reassurance that spring isn't too far away.

Today I saw the first few lambs. No daffodils yet.

Anyone else look for (or have seen) the first signs of spring?

You should never go with seeing lambs as a sign of spring. Lots of farmers now lamb their ewes inside now as they can then lamb earlier to get into the market earlier for the chance of a better price. It gives the lambs a good start before they go to field and less chance of a fox or badger taking stronger lambs and they dont have cubs to feed until April.
All we have here is the strong sign of winter, snow, ice and -3  :'(

Heard on Radio 4 that the lambs are dying straight after being born because they are being conceived when mossies are still about, so they are catching some virus. Sounds very unpleasant.
