pressure plate problem
« on: 25 October 2012, 03:28:27 pm »
fazer 600 t reg

started the bike up ok,
selected 1st gear
bike conked out,
thought it was the clutch stuck together,
took clutch out,
cleaned and oiled plates,
but found the pressure plate at the rear had bits missing where the springs touch.

any ideas why this would happen?
where can i get a replacement pressure plate?

I've no idea about your biking experience so forgive me if i'm way off but did you put it into gear with the side stand down?
And i don't understand why you'd oil clutch plates?

think i have found the problem , its similar to thundercat engines,
the presure plate can only fit one way into the basket,
and take off the sprocket cover to stop the push rod from putting pressure on the clutch plates,

so all i need to do is find a replacement plate,
then will take photos and show here

Yeah, new parts are never cheap unfortunately!!  :rolleyes
You could try a breakers search online, but it may be one of those parts that won't be sold seperately?

Its a wet clutch so it would be oiled when fired up?

@Skippernick, that's why i asked the question, but after a bit of research you're supposed to soak clutch plates in oil before fitting, preferably over night if possible!

No, i know the one you mean, but i've seen it mentioned in a few other places too.

I've never had to change a clutch so it's it's not something i've really looked in to, to be honest.

I was asking about a picture of the damaged part that you have. Much easier to comment on a picture as it answers a thousands questions.
Refitting new plates is very easy on the fazer and you don't even have to drain the oil if you leave it on the sidestand. However the torque on the pressure plate bolts is very low 8Nm (5lbs) and easily stripped. Which is why I have always recommended beginner mechanics buy or borrow a torque spanner in the 0 to 20 Nm range, they may be close to £100 but will save a fortune in the future.
Replace the springs at the same time with OEM ones.
Soak the plates in engine oil over night if possible, wipe off all the excess oil before fitting and fit them in reverse order of removal.
Friction plate, steel plate, damper ring and its friction plate, steel plate and so on.
The pressure plate should sit flush and may need to be rotated to get it to fit correctly.
As long as you have not removed anything else, then a new gasket and chek the dowels are in place and replace the cover, tighten the cover bolts in a criss cross patern to 12Nm.
Check the free play at the clutch lever and the oil level (just to be sure) i and fire it up.
