Try some ezstart in the air filter.
Could be a battery problem causing the ECU to not pump fuel whist cranking due to voltage drop.

Starter motor on the way out leaving not enough current for the glow plugs.
Ignition barrel issue.
Any exhaust emissions when trying to start?
Immobiliser issue?

Glow plugs. Battery. Could be immobiliser although because it cranks over I'm not sure. Do you have a spare key? If so try that and that will eliminate the immobiliser.

Thanks for all your help , I'll try all suggestions

I got it towed to a hill near by tried to bump start it, no joy, there no smell of diesel so maybe fuel pump .
