6th gear?
« on: 22 February 2015, 10:06:45 am »
Hi,

So I've been a reader for a while but never managed to join to now. I have a FZS 600 (2000 model) a while now and am concerned to be honest. Mostly I ride around London so 4th is as high as I've needed to go, however having taken it for a few blasts down the motorways etc, I've noticed it won't find 6th. It's like the gear just isn't there :(

I'm not really sure what I can do to look into this. I mean, for you other owners, can you find 6th while sitting with it turned off? Are there any tricks to getting it? I mean, other than the usual clunky 2nd gear, the rest are fine!

Any help at all would be great. A very confused fazer owner

*also to add, I've found this forum to be really helpful for other small issues so thanks for your inadvertent help already :)

Gear selector is fine, but am going to have a look and see if I can adjust it at all.

Looking at other forums where similar things have happened to other bikes, it may be clutch related. No two idea myself though. Just hoping it's not going to be an expensive trip to the garage :(

I almost never us the clutch on upshifts, except for the 1st to 2nd change; and 6th snacks in beautifully without the clutch - so I'm thinking that the "clutch problem" is a red herring.

As for other ways of changing gear, try shifting from 5th to 6th with just a quick little roll off/roll on of the throttle as you snick the gear lever up.

If he can't find 6th whilst using the clutch i doubt it'll suddenly appear by not using it!

Lol, I hate to say it but was thinking the same.

See so many new riders on forums with schoolboy errors (we've all been there), and wondered if it was due to counting 1 on the first upshift to second :)

Sadly no, I'm counting 1 down then 2, 3,4 &5 up. Unless neutral is a gear I'm only getting 5. I thought I'd miscounted the first few times, hence me just carrying on. Which is why I feel even more stupid now.

Think there's nothing for it but to ask a garage.

Just hoped maybe someone else has experienced the same thing and knew what to suggest. Daft thing is, I could live with 5.. If I wasn't supposed to have 6!

*sorry, by fine I meant the lever isn't bent, as the first point. In terms of looking at that, is it an easy job?

selector forks

what happens when you put it in 6th?
does it just go nowhere?
can you put it in 6th gear when stationary then rev it and not move... if so 6th is probably stripped

I can't get it into 6th either stationary or moving. The level moves up a bit but then stops as though there's nowhere to go. There's not even the slightest hint that there is something for it to move in to. I'm going to have a look at adjusting the selector myself, but that's about all I know how to do, so if that doesn't work I think I'll have to have someone look at it.

Very odd... Assuming I find out what it is I'll update it here.

Could be the rare 5 gear version, they only made a few and worth huge sums of cash.

Well, last night I played around with the height adjuster of the Gear Selector. After much messing I actually ended up disconnecting it and reconnecting it. Didn't seem in a vastly different location, however, much to my surprise and excitement this morning, I now have a 6th gear!

All I can assume is that prior to me purchasing it the lever had been moved to such an extent that there wasn't the movement available to push the actual gear selector into 6th. Either way, needless to say, I'm both ecstatic at having all the gears I was expected and also feeling like a complete tool for not doing this before posting on the forum.

Hopefully, should anyone else be unfortunate enough to have a similar problem, they'll see this and save themselves the embarrassment.

Thanks for all the advice people and if nothing else I hope I provided some entertainment :)

I'm now off to ride around in 6th at completely inappropriate times, just because I can!

Well done JFFaz.......if you look at the gear selector shaft you'll see a dot on the end , this should be inline with the gap where the bolt goes through on the lever...glad you sorted it   :)

The punch mark dot on the gear shaft should line up with slot on the toothed spline section of the gear change. It may not line up exactly but should be close enough, rotate it to the correct position before finally tightening it.

Same applies to all fazers

When I took mine off to polish I put my own mark on with a pen. I did see that it sort of lined up with the gap but did not know that was the official set up. I thought that you could position it where you was comfy and liked it within reason. Obliviously not then unless you don't want 6th.
