Fork oil 15w
« on: 27 August 2014, 04:55:25 pm »
Going to replace stock 5w with 15w in the forks... Found some guides

DIY How to Replace Motorcycle Fork Oil Yamaha FZ6…:
How to change fork seals in traditional (right wa…:
And a link  on focuk that doesn't have the pics

Looking for some ideas tips but the above either miss out tips n hints, or the methods differ slightly,  or the images are missing...
Tips like how to get the rod out, get right oil level, order of bolt removal....

Does anyone have a link to a 101 for a fzs

Rather bemusing... For fork oil change, The Haynes manual says refer to chapter 1, chapter 1 says refer to chapter 6. But I guess you just miss out some (unknown) steps although I have had bad experiences with Haynes as the odd thing gets left out or wrong order

Oh,and what will 15w give me over 5w. My commute is through B roads and country lanes, if that matters. My firms don't bottom out and roads are very uneven and potty and scarred tarmac, so, should I sick with 5w. The fork oil hasn't been changed in 17k according to previous owner

Cheers

Normal oil is 10w.
15w will firm up the front end and in my opinion makes it feel much more stable and predictable.
You will feel the bumps a little bit more though, so if you reckon you'll be using dodgy roads then maybe standard the 10w oil will be better for you.
To be honest i reckons it's a personal thing, although if you are a lightweight rider then stick with the 10w, but if you are a heavier rider or take luggage or passengers on a regular basis then i'd suggest 15w is the way to go.

NOTE: Your bike is an FZS600, not an FZ6.

I know. But I could not find a vid on fzs.

I have changed fork oil before on other bikes but not this one and wondered if there are any gotchas. I guess not but just checking

I was referring more to the fact that the FZ6 uses different oil, so don't presume things are the same between bikes.  ;)
