Crash bars

Right, who's got what and what do you see as the negative points of them?
I've got crash bungs atm but know from several previous experiences these are only good for dropping the bike at a standstill (which I've also done several times!)
I've narrowed my choice down to either Heed or Renntec, the full engine crash bars, not the smaller ones!

I've got the full renntec ones on. Apart from being heavy, bulky and (some would say) ugly, theres no real negatives to them. I've yet to test mine out yet though thankfully.

I've dropped the bike once at a stand still since I've had these fitted (2 or 3 years, quite an acheivement for shortarsed me) and they did a considerably better job than the crash bungs fitted previously which allowed the edges of the front fairing to hit the deck and get foc'ed up. Like you, I think crash bungs on the 600 are not very effective, I think their position low down makes them less than ideal.

Renntec & Heed (latter look neater to me) look beefier but the above has done everything I'd expect from crash bars so the fact they're smaller, lighter & cheaper is a positive point in my book.

Im not sure about the webmoto being 3 pionts as the top one is on a long bar attached to a point much lower

Yes, you're right they are in reality only attached to the frame at 2 points (I was just trying to differentiate from the ones in the 1st photo in your link)

What I did notice was that - whether intentionally designed to do so or not - because they are bolted to those plates, the bars can move a small amount, so there is a bit of "give" and the force is not directly transferred to the frame or engine bolts, not straight away at least. Another bonus is that it is very easy to remove the bars as you can simply remove them from the plates so you can leave the engine bolts in situ.

As well as protection my plan is to rivet sheet ally creating a belly pan, this is the main reason I'm looking at the bigger bars.
I'll have to eye things up cause in my mind I still can't decide whether to rivet over the top of the bars hiding them or under the bars to look a bit different!

Oh I see, is the ally for cosmetic purposes only or will it do something more - keep the bike cleaner?

The bigger and beefier the bars, the better! Had a set on my tiger 1050. When it went down the engine and frame were untouched, the crash bars were mangled!
Worth every penny.

Mick - I know the renntec's have a hole for where the bung in the frame is, are they bolted through that part of the frame too? (below the seat, not the front of the bike!)

Looking closer at the pic I'm assuming they're bolted in with the footpegs, is that right?

aye, one of the bolts is into the footpeg/hanger

The thing is the renntec's are more expensive than the Heed but if they bolt into the frame there that makes them a lot stronger!

just gone out and looked. there are two at the rear (both the top and bottom mounts for the footpeg hanger).

also one bolt at the front top into the frame, and one at the bottom front as well

I have the genuine Yamaha ones, 5DM-W0741-00
It has been down the road 3 times and the saved a lot of damage to the engine casings. On my 3rd set. Had black, then chrome and now back to black again

Yeah, I don't like them unfazed,  no supporting arm so mot as beefy as the Heed or Renntec!

I thought the same before my first off. I bought them originally for looks and fall over protection.
Was plesently surprised when they took the brunt in a the slide without anything other than road rash.

I like to have the rad protected also. You can ride with bent leaking forks,  (speaking from experience) but not with a bent leaking rad

So, been looking again at getting some bars for the bike.

With the Heed or Renntec ones with their cross bar, do any of you find gets in the way of your legs/feet at all?

So I've been looking at the Yammy ones, seems there's a few variants:-

The lower rounded mini one: 5RT-W0741-00 (as pictured in this Fazer brochure)
And the squarer taller ones: 5DM-W0741-00 / 5DM-W0741-10  (black/chrome)
These last ones, seem to come in two versions, one where two halves meet in centre of bike and one where they don't.  Can anyone shed some light on these two version? Foxeye/Boxeye versions? older/newer iterations?Granted, neither will provide as much protection as the more encompassing Heed/Renntec bars, but I think I prefer the more discreet look of them. And from much experience, the rear of the engine doesn't hit the ground anyway, as my pegs and Givi rack/box take the impact first...

Not sure why there are different but I think they'll both fit all the FZS600 models. I would say that the version where the two halves join would be better.
