Hi,
according to the manual it is the overturn sensor.
For future reference: 3000 revs = the TPS
                                  4000 = speed sensor
7000 = the dreaded exup and
                                  9000 = the overturn switch
Hope this helps :)

« on: 28 March 2012, 07:45:12 pm »
Hi,
On long runs not giving it plenty I can also get quite close to 55mpg, but once when I did a north to south of France run in one go at a little over the limit (!) it dropped to 45 that was averaging close to a ton though, so I think the gen1 is capable of serious mpg even if you do give it a bit. The most I have got on the trip before bottling it for a garage was 210 could only get 19 litres in it at the garage.........

One reason why there may not be as many places open at the weekend is that they are open during the week for the local builders etc to get a 5 course meal (at midday) and so dont have to open at the weekend. That is definitely the case near me anyway, hence you are correct in that macdo is very busy esp on a Sunday

hiya
to add my 2 centimes worth, I live in south central France and there are loads of decent routes around, in fact Ride mag recently published 2 which pass near me....,  as I dont want to restrict my 1000, I return each year to the UK (fortunately I get it MOTed the same time as the Wetherspoons real ale festival - love frog food but really miss brit beer) I take a diff route every time and although I have done mine to Calais in one go I usually have one stop over in an ETAP hotel, roughly £35 a night inc simple brekky, also there are almost always cheapish restaurants very close to the hotels.
My last trip I took the back roads and had a great time :) If you are thinking of passing near Figeac, or Aurillac then pop in for a cuppa, there is a really great restaurant 2 mins walk that does rooms too, and the route from Aurillac to Calais isn't bad at all!!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Oxford Heated Sports Grips
« on: 07 March 2012, 08:59:36 am »
Re: connecting Oxford grips to ign or battery, you can effectively do both using a relay, the coil contacts on the relay go to the ignition live and the switched contacts go to the grips and direct to the battery, so when ign is on relay energises and connects the grips direct to the battery.
Cheers

Not sure if it is a fazer prob, others will no doubt set things straight, but could it be fuel evaporation?
I had a 3500 Rover once and the genuises (?) at Buick, Rover or BL decided to route the fuel line around the block so after a small stop the fuel in the line would evaporate etc. A longer stop would not have an effect as the fuel cools enough to work normally. Just a thought..................

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Heated Clothing
« on: 27 February 2012, 09:26:42 am »
As an alternative all be it a more expensive one, you can get clothing with battery packs that you charge up then drain as you ride, not sure if these can work in tandem with the bike too to prolong the battery but it means the clothes don't have to be wired to the bike. If you are going the clothing route think about heated socks, sounds a bit daft, but I have really shite circulation but with decent non-heated gear its only really my hands and feet that get cold.
I would recommend hand guards too as these work well with heated grips etc and keep a lot of the rain off, went out for a 90 mile trip the other day and had to turn the grips off due to the protection of the guards.
Have a good trip :)

mmm I was lead to believe that using fully synth oil on a fazer was a bad idea and would lead to clutch slip??
Personally I use semi-synth and change both oil and filter once a year - which equates to between 3 and 5 thou miles, bike runs just lovely and the old oil looks pretty clean, at least compared to my diesel van's :).

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Oil lamp comes on when running :(
« on: 06 February 2012, 06:04:20 pm »
Seems to me after reading all the replies that almost each fazer is slightly different in its oil lamp switch point. For the past 7 years I filled to the top mark and all was well. After a run all seemed well, but I fear I won't be taking the bike out for a while yet, it has below zero for the last 6 days and reached -11 overnight. The ice under the snow is a real bugger so no riding yet!!
Any point in starting the bike up and leaving it running for say 10 mins or just leave well alone until the roads have cleared and I can go for an actual ride?
Cheers for all the replies :)

Ooo I have noticed that the fan on mine (-04) does this, is it supposed to do it? Also if I put it in gear the fan goes off, found no mention of these in the manual so is it normal Fazer behaviour??

Know nothing about the pipe sorry, but agree with the rivet comment, like the look of what it should look like though. Newbie qn however....how'd you know the weld was not so good and yes I know very little about gas welding. Would I be right to suggest that the red bit, slightly,, crystalline appearance, shouldn't be there???

Personally I change the bike's oil every year which is around 3 to 4 thou miles, it is always clear and not that much darker than the new oil that replaces it. I hope this means the engine is in good nick! ;p

AIS is the air injection system, it apparently helps the bike pass emission tests in the nasty places that have them. It is that not pleasant looking nest of pipes that go over the top of the engine and lots of people remove it to make the bike look nicer and get better access to the plugs and top engine ini general, not sure if there's any performance gain - others can tell you more about that.
If you are going to change the plugs I found that the tool supplied with the bike actually works rather well, I had no issues getting all four out and more importantly the new ones in :)
A really useful site for the FZS 1000 is to be found here...http://www.cartestsoftware.com/fz1 , enjoy your bike, they are great bits of kit.

Hi,
If the bike is still on the original plugs it maybe due a change, I had a misfire problem on mine at around 20000 miles (2004 model) which a new set of plugs fixed. Do you know if there is something on the bike that could drain the battery ie an alarm etc, mine struggles if left for a while, I suppose I should get a trickle charger, but after a run it works a treat. Also check that the spark plug caps really are nice and tight esp the inner two as even a small gap can let water in and then you will get running/starting probs.
Cheers

Well that's a weight off!!
Cheers chaps,  I was half expecting "OMG your motor is on the way out mate, that'll be a total strip down before you even think of starting it again" nice to know its one of those FZS things "They all do that sir", especially as in the last 7 and half years she's been utterly reliable, sample "conversation" with bike - pootle around the country lanes you say, oh OK then and then a 2000 mile trip round France yeah that'll do nicely!
Last trip was to the Milan Bike Show via Monte Carlo (my neighbours live there in a tithe flat, lucky sods!!)
PS the Milan show is bloody huge, 5 halls, loads of new bikes and the pole dancing girls right next to the Triumph stand weren't too bad either ;)

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Oil lamp comes on when running :(
« on: 24 January 2012, 04:25:20 pm »
mmm wont press spell chech again as it deleted all the post!!
Anyway....Went out today to start bike up (2004 Fazer 1000 no mods save larger screen) and all the warning lamps went out after bike has started. Left bike to idle for a few mins, came back and the oil lamp was on. Gave it a little more revs to see if it would go out but no it stayed on :( Stopped bike and restarted lamps all went off as excpected and this time the oil lamp didn't come back on. This is the second time I have had this happen, the first time I went for a ride anyway and the bike behaved as it should, but as it happenbed again I turned it off and put it back in the shed. The level is fine, near the top of the sight glass. It has been cold and wet here so I have not been out for just over a week, but I have left the bike for much longer than that with no such problems before, any ideas?
Also noticed a strange electrical sounding noise coming from the front of the engine area when I turned the ign on but didn't start the bike, not the usual whirring and clicking sound that dies away which I believe to be the exup sorting itself out, but maybe wrong - I usually wait for this to stop before starting......????
Cheers
