Bike was running a little rough, now won't start.
#1
Hi folks.

Bike was running fine up until yesterday.

Had done a motorway dash (approx 120/130 Kms @ 140kmh+ the entire way...)

Reserve light came on with about 30ish Kms left of the journey (half motorway, other half normal town speeds)

Yesterday evening it was reluctant to start (3 attempts) and was a spluttering a little a low revs.

This morning, very reluctantly started - got the gear on inside but hear it running crap, died before I got downstairs.

Got  it going but didn't want to stay running.
Won't start now.
(Had already decided to get the bus at this point, did notice fuel on the ground, presumably from flooding it and that was overflow)

Question is,I'm pretty sure I've sucked up something from the bottom of tank - any suggestions for a possible fix that doesn't involve taking the carbs off?

(Is there possibly an air lock rather than debris?)

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated - it's my only transport and my mechanic won't get a chance to get into it till next week, only other alternative is ring recovery and get it sent 200km away- and that's not guaranteed as hes likely busy too!

Thanks in advance.

Could you actually be out of fuel?
Does the fuel pump keep priming every time you turn the key?

No, fuel is there(fueled Up that evening - ran fine yesterday morning on the way to work too)

I think so,pretty sure I heard the pump spin up this morning.
Will check again when I get home.

I don't think it would have ran from kilcullen to Waterford at 150kmh+ flawlessly if I did.... Tongue

It's gone in to the mechanic now.

Not running on(or sporadically anyway)on 2&3.

Coil can't be got new from Yamaha (Danfay at least).

(I'm not sure if that's the issue but started looking just in case!)

I'll know more by Tuesday evening after he gets into it.

What was the outcome of this, it's always helpful to let us know what solved the problem, so that other people can be helped with similar issues in the future?  Huh

Ah...

Mechanic rang me the afternoon he went to get into it.

Basically,he started t up and it ran fine!
Said he tried it a few times and no issues (a little reluctant to start but otherwise fine) and as he was away for a week from that evening suggested I take it back for the week and see how it goes.

I'll have had it back 2 weeks on Tuesday and apart from being a little reluctant to start occasionally it's running like a champ.

That said, it's now booked for this Thursday to have valve clearances checked/adjusted, check/reset cct (very noisy - I'm hoping the reset cures this but will chat to him about possible cam chain replacement if needed), head stock bearings and a few other bits.

Basically I told him - do the above mentioned bits, and if the cam chain doesn't need replacing - go through the bike, anything he thinks needs doing - have at it and when ya get to the €1000 mark and there's something you think should be done give me a shout beforehand.

(Also have a Delkivic 420mm tri-oval for him to fit, balance carbs afterwards)

May seem a bit much to pump that amount of money into a 21 year old bike but I'm really happy with it and I don't think there's anything drastically wrong with the bike - just getting it to where it should be.

It's phenomenal on juice too (have been getting close to 380kms from a tank - and that's with motorway stints (160k/180kms @ above 140kmh for long stretches)

Done Waterford to South Dublin suburbs on Friday in 1hr32mins on less than half a tank... seriously impressive in my book!

I had work done on my bike last September and while it was being done something snapped in the middle of the engine and it needed a full strip down to sort it out. There were other unexpected issues too like snapped exhaust stud bolts which just added to the misery, so if it makes you feel any better i spent more money than you've said because the bike was already in bits, like you it's my only transport, so i needed it back. But i live in London and nothing is cheap there anyway.
It's in lovely condition engine wise now, but unfortunately i only had 4 weeks of riding it then suffered a separate serious injury that nearly killed me so i haven't ridden it since then. But at least it's in good nick and i've still been looking after it wherever needed, just got to wait a bit longer before i can safely get back on it.

As for your bike i was going to suggest checking if the starter relay is okay, because they seem to misbehave before totally failing, then everything shuts down when you least expect it to.

I had some starting issues years ago and it was fine after fitting new spark plugs - maybe try that
I don't do rain or threat there of. dry rider only with no shame.

Thanks for the input lads.

Yeah,as you both say,it could very well be something simple - the workshop I'm bringing it to are brilliant (it's 180km from where I'm based!), I've no qualms about letting them know my budget and doing whatever they think is necessary.

I think so long as she's not burning oil excessively (and hopefully the cam chain is good!) I'll be getting my money's worth and then some.

But definitely main priorities are valve clearances (4k km overdue).

Head bearings (occasional clonk - have checked all bolts on forks/brakes etc so pretty sure they need doing)

CCT (I'm hoping resetting this will quiet down the clatter!) along with grease the swing arm pivot(and or replace bearing if needed, its likely never been touched)

It's possible he'll recommend doing the carb inlet rubbers (PO replaced with cheap items (I think he said he got them on Amazon?) the 2 outers look like they're cracking already and they pulse...not ideal and likely too thin and possibly contributing the the hanging idle that's going on.

New end can  is completely unnecessary but is a present to myself for passing test/40th!

I'm really looking forward to picking it up in a few weeks time, running sweet and sounding a little saucy?
(I am of course mentally preparing for a bad news phone call in the next week or so!)

As it is,I've a piece of shit 50cc scooter I'm going out to throw new brakes on (both master cylinders banjoed - along with tyres, not my best purchase) that will get me about while I wait for Bluey to come back to me.

Could be far worse though - I very, very nearly bought a bloody Deauville! (Test rode, 2/3rds of the price handed over...thank god I didn't sign the logbook!?)

Just make you you make a note of all work done to it by the mechanic, and yourself in the future.
I created a list with date, mileage, and ALL work done and made a motorbike email folder.
Every time something new has been done, forward the email to yourself after adding anything new, then stick it back into the folder.
The reason being you simply won't remember what's been done, and having everything  on one page in front of you to read easily is a great reminder for things like oil changes, coolant, tyre changes, etc.
I also add costs as well and clues if something was tricky to do (yourself).

Tbh,I wouldn't know how.
It's been up with the mechanics the past week and a bit.
Talking to one of them today - they're nearly done.
Asked them to go through everything they think needs doing, trust these guys 100% so will be happy with whatever they report on they've done (were no phonecalls about anything out of the ordinary during this time so ?)

Hopefully have it back later in the week.
