Idle adjuster not working after carb balance
#1
Hope someone on here can help me with this one. Balancing my carbs last night I ran into a problem. 1 & 2 were pretty well balanced, 3 & 4 were out slighty so I balanced those up. When I checked both sides together it was off. However, when I adjusted the middle screw to level up both sides the revs dropped (up or down - cant recall). I went on to adjust the idle adjuster to compensate and nothing happened. It is neither raising or lowering the revs. I can guarantee the adjuster was working the day before. Is it possible that the middle adjuster has affected the operation of the idle screw adjustment as in it has it pulled it away from adjustment paddle? The idle adjuster is not seized as I can see it turning under the carbs. Gonna give it another shot this evening after work. Advice greatly appreciated

when you adjusted the carbs how much did you have to turn the adjusters mine were miles out and i was lucky if i had to turn them 1/4 a turn if you had to turn them alot then their is a chance you have moved the  idle aduster stop and will need to start again

Hey Steveo, I had exactly the same problem last autumn when I was trying to balance my carbs. Someone on here posted to tell me yes, the adjustments on the balancing screws can move the paddle out of reach of the idle screw.

In the end I fiddled around for quite a while with the balancing screws and idle screw until I found the best possible setup and just lived with it. For a 20 year old bike it was good enough and ran better than I had ever had before. If you want it to be spot on perfect I recommend taking the carbs completely to bits and setting everything to standard (pilot screws, jet needle washers, float needle valve etc), re-assembling, using a colourtune and balancing again to see whether each carb needs more or less fuel or air, taking everything apart and adjusting accordingly and then re-assembling again. Or you can just live with it as best as you can get it.

The service manual really helped me, better than the online Haynes manual in my opinion.

Sounds to me like you need adjust all the screws up (or down - I don't know which) to get them back in contact with the idle adjuster.

Start with the middle one, the adjust each side to align to that.
