Oil change prior to spring

Hi Foccers, rather than asking the local bike shop and looking thick,  i want to know what grade / type oil you lot are mainly using. Handbook not much help really. Kinda wished I asked when I bought it but you know what like just want it get on the thing and ride away :rollin

Most are running a decent quality 10w40 semi-synth motorcycle oil.

Some - those who have investigated a bit to understand what's what with motor oil - are running auto diesel oil which is a good deal cheaper and every bit as good as bike-specific stuff.

It's winter, so my bet is this oil thread will run for 3 pages ... Wink

C'mon now, we all love a "which tire & oil thread" i still have fond memories of last years "Oil change-will this cause issues?" thread. We got three pages out of that one, i'll say 2 pages. :'(

I've seen oil and tyre threads ruin for 100 or more pages on other forums.
But.......
Jasmo ma is the actual requirement but as a recommendation I'd say Castro power one semi or fully synthetic, or my current oil of choice is Smith and Allen and it's only £8.50
/ 4.5 litres.

I change my oil twice a year and use the cheapest that meets the specs. in the manual. I'm currently using Halfrauds semi synth.

Recently switched to fully synthetic for no other reason than the bike is a keeper and anything I can do to prolong the life of the engine is worth paying for including a new filter with each oil change. Semi synthetic is more than fit for purpose though. I would consider your mileage and timescales between oil changes into your purchasing decision as you don't need top of the range oil if Like Rob R you are regular with the changes, if you CBA to keep on top of it then a higher quality oil or fully synthetic would be a better choice. Definitely bike specific oil unless you've done your research.

If you go fully synth make sure to get oil specified for motorcycle engines which also lubes the gearbox. Some generic (car) synth oils will cause clutch slip. BTW I'm still a Silkolene man, semi synth in the road bikes and fully synth in the drag bike. Castrol Power 1  is also  (widely used by drag racers and road race teams) highly recommended and can often be got cheaper than equivalents from other major brands.

OK - As there are motorcycle mineral oils out there that meet the basic specification (SE, SF, SG) would anyone use these if there were a cost advantage over semi-synth? What to people think about the recommended oil change intervals of 4k / 6months, does this cover Yamaha if people use the cheapest SE mineral oil so if you use a higher spec semi-synth or fully synth you can ignore this?

Got my 10 litres of smith and allan, bought a hi-flo 204 filter, and champion filter from halfreuds to see my year out :rollin,

That's a point. Why are tyres always black? Surely with modern methods they could make them any colour, and red ones would obviously make the bike go faster....

Oil is so critical to the functioning of your engine, gearbox, and clutch, especially in a highly stressed, high-speed, precision modern motorcycle, so always get the best oil and change it as often as is practical. This means fully synthetic, and I would not like to prove this, but Mobile One. Just my two pence worth. :rolleyes
