Hi All,
After a group ride this afternoon, guys behind me all said the fazer is overfueling. Said they could smell it strongly and of course bike is really poppy on deceleration. K and N filter, Micron full system. (See pic) Recent carb balance.
Not sure if a previous owner has been fannying about with the mixture or wether just dirty carb issuses. Bike was sat for a couple of years until I bought it last year. Plan to remove the carbs, strip and clean in the next few weeks anyway. I did wonder if it was just symptomatic of the full micron system on there?
as your going in there then just wait and check everything
standard jets are 115 across the board
if its over fueling then my first guess would be float heights which is enough to check with a piece of pipe and a small ruler
i think is about 4.5mm above carb bowl lip (pre 2000) and 3.5mm (2000 onwards)
get yourself some m4 10mm (i think) full thread cap screws you will want 16 of them and you can replace the shitty screws that hold the bowls to the carbs - for a couple of quid its better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them and it makes life so much easier in the future
Personally if the only problem is popping on over run and the bike is running well I would live it alone.
In my opinion many fazer riders have never cracked open the carbs and unless you have evidence to the contrary I would doubt anyone has changed the jets.
The nose of someone riding behind you is not a good measure of a bikes fuelling - a better measure would be the condition of the plugs and if the bike is running crap !
Aftermarket pipes often cause bikes to pop on over run , this can be exacerbated by air leaks in the exhaust system.
Feel free to tell me I'm talking shite and totally disregard my advice .

shut garage door and start her up if you can smell it and your eyes are watering its a bit rich
if you collapse and die without noticing a petrol smell then it is fine but you stayed in the garage too long

you would be surprised how often we have figured one of our classic cars is rich by simply standing at the back of it
i so wish i was joking but i dont want to live in a nursing home so i will happily shorten it by sniffing exhausts :rolleyes
Carbon monoxide detector in garage is handy for those I'll just fire the bike up for a second occasions and then keep it running longer than intended.
Exhaust smell can be misleading since higher octane fuels give a funny smell on the Fazer possibly because it will run richer on them since they need more air.

I'll whip a plug off and have a look. Without sounding intentionally stupid this is the only bike I've ever ridden (with the exception of of the schools diversion) so I don't really have a bench mark for what "running well" is.
It doesn't like starting when it's already warm if that's worth anything? Exhaust always smell rotten to me. Like mouldy grass haha
as much as i like to take a ride to help someone out i dont think devon/cornwall is within my area of 'reasonable distance' to come have a look lol

poping on overrun is not a indication its rich its an indication that unburnt fuel is igniting int the exhaust witch means their is an air leak and more than likely it will be the drain hole that lets moisture out this is a carbed bike so this is normal as it will still draw fuel on over run where ass injection bikes dont so less chance of poping . mine does it and is fuelled perfect as it was checked on the dyno so nothing to worry about if it was over fuelling it would not run clean and would be woolly feeling like you have left the choke on

It could be that they're not used to the richer exhaust smell from a bike that was manufactured previous to that.

My bike used to crackle and pop a lot when I put a scorpion can on. But calmed down loads after a carb balance.
It surprises me how frequently people recommend stripping carbs. For something to block a jet it has to pass through your fuel filter!! (or air filter?) I've removed and serviced my carbs twice on the advice of people on forums. Both times the issue was caused by something else and both times the inside of my carbs were spotless!! In my experience 9 times out of 10 misfires are caused by something else.
i used to work on a rolling road and carb bike always pop and show flames but most times you dont see or hear it as you are infront of it when you are riding it nothing to worry about
