Peculiar 'chuffing' noise.
#1
This has been going on for some time now, but damned if I can pinpoint it  :\  The bike rides perfectly, and I have covered several thousand miles with it doing this. It's almost like a sawing noise, heard at lower speeds. It speeds up as the bike does, and I thought it might be pads rubbing on the discs, but it doesn't seem to speed up enough to be that, and I can see no evidence for it - discs are fine, brakes work fine. Plenty of material left on the pads. No evidence of anything rubbing on the tyres that I can see. Only does it when accelerating at these lower speeds (say 10-40mph approx), doesn't do it with throttle off. The chain has been adjusted a couple of times since I first heard it, made no difference, neither did a thorough service, which also didn't turn up any problems. It seems quite loud too.

Anyone got any clues what it might be, what to check?

Is it worse in the rain?

I don't actually recall hearing it at all in the rain, but can't be sure. What did you have in mind?

When you hear it again pull the brake lightly to see if it gets worse or better. When I eventually changed the pads it was not as bad even though they were EBC HH, it sounds different now with ferodo pads in

Sounds like chain related to me but recent service should of sorted that out, how old are the chain and sprockets ?...if that was me I would give the chain a really good clean, take the front sprocket cover off and degrease , clean the chain guide that sits on top of the swing arm and reassemble and lube, check wheel alignment both on the swing arm marks and a strainht edge...then a test ride...
One, is never going to be enough.....

Chain kit has loads of wear left in it yet, probably done about 7000 miles. It gets regular cleaning and lubing, adjustment is correct, not too tight or loose. I'll check the chain guide, but I always clean as much of it as I can with it in situ when I do the chain. I've never been one to use more than the s/arm marks for chain alignment, but never had this before on any bike. Never had the sprocket cover off myself, so perhaps time for a clean up in there anyway, can have a look about while it's off.

I'll try that on light acceleration, when I hear the noise. They're EBC HH in the front, EBC std in the back.

The other thing I think I noticed yesterday was that on a downhill stretch under acceleration it didn't make the noise, but not sure if that was every time. Need to check that again before I'm sure.

My first thought at the mention of "chuffing" was of a spark plug that was slightly loose, but if you've serviced it, then that should have dealt with it.

not experienced much else for this other than with an exhaust - loose clamping bolt (eith at the cyl head, or another joint) or even a small hole in one of the pipes.

The other thing it could be is noisy wheel bearings, although that us more of a roaring sound

It could be the sound of ur ass when approaching a bend with a hedge while checking mirrors ....have u tried clenching ur cheeks on the twisty's ?
Just flapping about on this stagnant little pond on the outer rim of the internet.....yup....  :-))

How's that high performance NC700 working out for you?  :lol

Tried the brakes on acceleration when hearing the noise, makes no difference. I don't think it's wheel bearings - I've had one go on me on a previous bike and it was nothing like this. It gets worse as everything warms up, but had another good look round and can see nothing rubbing anywhere, no untoward vibration. Very puzzling.

Is it there if you jack up the front and spin the front wheel? If it is remove the calipers and hang them up away from the wheel and spin it again. If it goes, it's the pads/discs. It is the slow process of elimination.

Mine had a raspy noise that was intermittent the other month.  Couldn't tell what caused it when riding.  Sometimes it did it when cornering but not always.  Acceleration deceleration intermittent.  Riding at constant speed it was fine.  After giving it a once over at work I noticed my front sprocket retaining ring wedged in the frame.  My sprocket nut threads had worm smooth.  New nut and it's fine. I did notice spinning the back wheel in reverse made a racket but not forward...

That was my first thought or a stripped stud.
I could change my opinion, but then we'd both be wrong.

how soon you all forget,, this noise is normal from the transmission on gen 1 fazers when accelerating hard in too high a gear,, everyone's will do it,, get down the box and it won't happen ;-)  accelerate in high gears with low revs and it will trrrrrrrr like fck, perfectly normal ;-)

None of my last four did this, and this one didn't until a few thousand miles ago. It does it when accelerating gently in any gear.

I don't think it's an exhaust blow as it doesn't appear to be rev-related, just road speed. It's the same if I accelerate in one gear, or if I short shift through the box.

Today I whipped the sprocket cover off, cleaned up the gunge (wasn't that much), cleaned the chain again, properly cleaned the chain guide, and re-adjusted the chain. No change  :\  The chain does have a bit of a tight spot now (adjusted to allow for this), so looks like new chain kit may be in order soon anyway. Still, you'd think adjusting the chain would make some difference if it were this.
