Clutch
#1
Hi

Fitted a new aftermarket clutch cable less than 30miles ago.
Went out today and lost clutch totally, lever pulls back to bars with max adjustment on lever and cable.
Was a bitch to get home lucky only had 3 miles, stalled every stop
The clutch marks line up (arrow and dot on arm) and you can push lever as much as possible and it will spring back, so looks ok
Cable hasn't snapped just seems to have stretched???

A lot of us use OEM for clutch cables for the very reason you mention. hope you can sort it soon.

Thanks Dave48

Sorted for now. Put the old cable back on, near its end of life but works fine.
It turned out to be the outer cable had come out the crimped steel bend.
My fault for being tight, but ive always brought aftermarket cables.
Yamaha are a bit high at approx. £50 but don't want to be let down again so will have to order one.

Those cables seem to be a hit and miss affair, to such a level one would wonder about their quality control.

Know a few who are very happy with them and others who had nothing but problems with them (e.g stretching, stiff to use, lasting only a few thousand miles, cable rubber perishing within 12 months, inners to long or to short) and would never buy them again.

I replaced my own clutch cable on the 600 at 64000 miles with a second hand one which came with a sprocket cover I was buying for the internal damper and plate and cost £26. Was taken from a 17000 miles crashed bike and has over 20000 miles on it now.

An oem one is about £40/45 and considering how good they are and how long they can last, they are probably worth it.

Hindsight is a good thing but only possible afterwards http://foc-u.co.uk/Smileys/efocicon/lol.gif
I wont take a chance with the cable again, if it had happened a few more miles away from home I would have been stuck.
The crimp on the cable didn't hold and as such the outer casing pushed into the metal bend shortening the outer and lengthening the inner, result cable too long.
