Hey guys, got another stupid question for you in case you were bored. Did lots of googling but no one seems to be able to come to a consensus. As always any advice is much appreciated.
The other day I was parked in a parking lot in neutral setting up my navigator and some kid waddles over (as they do when they see bikes). I rev the bike a little to amuse him and then go back to my navigator. Distracted I don't notice how he blips my throttle, I'm pretty sure he hit redline very briefly. Don't think he bounced it off the limiter but it was up there by the sound it made. Now I know revving a bike without load is bad for the engine but should I be worried about what happened? It rode fine after and started good the next day but some of these horror stories I read online have me worried.
Thank you.
It's not a problem, panic over.
Engine was running already so the oil was doing its job, no big deal at all.

Errrr yup, should be worries...........lad touches your bike without asking, bounces it off the limiter aaaaaaaaaaaaand you didn't slap him ffs :lol

Those are my principles...if you don't like them I have others.
Many years ago I red-lined a kawa zephyr on the motorway of all places, heap of sh1t had a false neutral between 5 and 6th. Engine started thumping like a twin-tub washer on spin cycle! :lol The big end had gone. Ended up splitting the engine casing and got a crankshaft from a bike breakers. With a new set of white metal bearings I was back in business. Lessons learnt, don't think I've got the patience to do this sort of thing now.

I sat on a Zephyr years ago, i didn't need to ride it, once it was started it rattled like nails in a biscuit tin rolling down some stairs.
Bloody horrible thing, i would've been amazed if it could actually reach the red line at all to be honest.
I can only presume that the red line is a safety barrier type recommended place before hitting the real danger zone, but just giving the bike one blat of the throttle wouldn't do any harm at all, especially as the oil would've been warmed up.

In the pre rev limiter days it could have been a serious problem and caused damaged due to over revving, but the rev limiters are there to protect the engine, even if the engine is revved in neutral.
With advances in oil and engine components it is not as anything like the problem as it used to be.

You're so right darrsi, it really was a heap of sh1t!
I think you're right it won't do no harm being in the red line for a quick blip, I'd imagine redlining is a regular thing in MotoGP. It's ok for the factory teams who can rebuild the engine after every race, fully synth oil probably helps.

Man I know, how does some kid just think it's OK to twist my throttle. Would have been worse had it caused issues I guess. That'd certainly be one of the stupider ways to have your bike go out on you.
Yeah rode it again today, seems like its running just like it used to. Man all those floated valves and bearing wear stories on the internet had me freaked out. Especially after I've been babying my bike so hard. Thanks a lot guys. Soothed some paranoia.
Bikes really should come with sub red line neutral rev limiters like high performance cars do.
