Hotwired Fazer won't start :(
#1
Morning all,

Some little gobshite tried to steal my lovely Fazer last night Sad I don't think they got it started because I found it a short way down the road in a hedge.

I've got it home, wired the ignition into the on position (using the Haynes manual as a reference) and.... nothing! The starter isn't turning, it feels like the kill switch is on but it isn't and there is no damage to the controls on the right handlebar.

Any ideas?

Things I've tried so far:
- Wiring up the ignition
- Checked all fuses
- Checked for any other damage

My multimeter decided to crap out on me this morning so I haven't been able to check if power is getting to where it should be yet.

The bike is a 98 FZS600.

Thanks

Gary

Have you tried bridging the starter solenoid? also check the large fuse on the solenoid housing

Is that the 30A fuse? If so I've checked that one and it's fine.

I should have mentioned, all electrics are working and I'm getting the fuel and oil lights lighting up as you would expect if the kill switch was on.

Where would I bridge on the starter solenoid?

Use a 2pence piece across the terminals where the large leads attach to the solenoid. This will turn the bike over.

Nothing!

Just to check I'm doing it right, I took the connector off (between the main fuse and the spare 30A fuse) and used a 1p to bridge the two pins on the OS of the bike. I can't quite make sense of that connector on the wiring diagram so I don't know if that's the right procedure.

Either way, I've taken the battery out and put it on my Oximiser. It's reading low, but not empty so I'm giving it a bit of a charge before I try anything else. Not that my symptoms point to a ow battery anyway! I'd expect everything to go out when I pressed the starter button if that were the case.

Any more ideas are greatly appreciated.

And there's life!!! Just about.

He starts in neutral, with the sidestand up and the clutch pulled in. Now I know for a fact I didn't need to do that before.

I can see in the circuit diagram how the trifecta of switches work together, but I can't see how it allows it to start without (I believe it only needs to be in neutral normally).

So I'm back to you guys, any pointers as to where I should look for a problem? My first thought would have been the neutral switch, but the indicator light is working fine so I think that's fine.

I think you might be right!

A bit more investigation and it seems to be something to do with the neutral switch. When I put the sidestand down the engine cuts out as if it's still in gear.

I know the indicator light works, but looking at the wiring diagram there's a separate signal wire that runs to the ignition isolation system so I'm guessing it's something to do with that.

Either way I have more pressing things to worry about, like my upcoming MOT, so a little problem like that can wait!

Thanks for your help
