Restyling a fazer - tidy tail faring?

Ok, so I saw this photo the other day, and I just thought 'wow, that looks very cool'. Now, unfortunately it's a photoplop, so there's no real help to be had!




But it got me thinking - how COULD we get a tail anywhere near that tidy and neat? Obviously not with the stock, bulky, seat faring. So what could fit? Anyone got any idea's? (by fit, I mean tweaked to fit, I don't mean making a new thing out of fibreglass)


And has anyone got any other suggestions of nice ways of modifying a Fazer's appearance? (I fully accept that people's opinions differ, but if you're of the impression that a fazer looks best stock, and the standard faring is pretty. You're probably not a useful asset to this conversation)

Are you thinking of Wraith? He's got a Aprilia rear end, I think.

I'm debating an R1 tail myself!

Could be interesting to see! I probably want smoother and more minimalistic, from what I've seen, Aprilia's tend to be quite angular. I'm thinking an early Honda Hornet, with a different rear light, and a little chopped maybe.

I think the tail has the look of a Fazer FZ1.

Similar in length, but without all the jagged edges and detail, just smooth and rounded. Interesting!

Very nice! Which duke rear end is that?

And do you have no airbox in that photo? And twin headlights? And chance of any more pics? :p

What pix you after?
Or if your near the sussex area drop me a pm and see it for yourself

It's got 4 pod filters and been rejetted
Twin light that will be going for a headlight mask
And it's going to have a USD fork front end swap

Just a ongoing project really

The seat unit is a copy of a 748/916/996
You can find loads of them on evil bay

Quick and easy is to take off the grabrail and cover the holes with a disk of gloss stickyback plastic and then move the numberplate up as far as it will go over the reflector and then cut off the mudguard flush with the number plate. Refit a stand-alone reflector so it shows just below the numberpalte.
I don't do rain or threat there of. dry rider only with no shame.

Just got this off the previous owner

You can go up to 1.3mm but I found there was a lack of power at the bottom end.... as far as I remember there are 1.15mm jets in yours.... 


I will go though the old paperwork and see if there is any info there as well

Thanks for that. Any information gratefully received as there doesn't seem to much info available on the subject. Most comments I've seen reckon these bikes don't like pod filters. My feeling is that very few who've fitted pods have had them properly set up on a dyno.

Just a thought - the carbs are probably on other IL4s - could you use them as a reference?

Do you mean the same carbs on a different model that is fitted with pods? If so that sounds like a champion idea.

Yep. If memory serves, they're relatively common Mikunis?

There's probably a massive flaw in my thinking here, but I'll wait to be corrected!

The valve sizes and exhaust sizes probably make a difference. But as you say, it's just for reference, a starting point. So I think it's a pretty clever idea.

There is a range of options:

Simple: As said above get the smallest legal plate, move it up.  No need to chop existing mudguard though IIRC.  Can get smaller indicators.  Buy TCP aerodynamics / Yamaha official seat cover to cover the pillion seat.  Sadly their website seems to have gone: http://www.tcpsa.com/defaultsite but the catalogue is here:

You could buy an underskirt if you want some colour but I think that is a limited value option!

Could fit flush indicators if you wanted.


The harder options are to fit aftermarket seat units or ones off donor bike like the ones above.  Usually needs the subframe cutting.  Both examples above have been cut - you can tell as the subframe is parallel to the alloy bar that comes off the pillion footpegs.
