Engaging first gear, Clutch issue?
#1
Hot or cold when I engage first gear it always crunches quite loudly. To its credit, although its done this for as long as I can remember it hasn't spat any cogs out yet. On all my previous and present other bikes holding the clutch in and blipping the throttle a few times either reduces or stops this altogether, but not on the Fazer. Are there any known problems with the clutch? It's a 1999 model, owned by me from new, 21000 miles n the clock. Please enlighten me, thanks.

Quite common with fazers, mine does it all the time

They're a bit clunky in general. To help, your best bet is to have good quality oil and change it reglarly. Also make sure your clutch cable is adjusted correctly and that you've got the correct amont of slack in your chain

That clunk noise to 1st is designed to get the pedestrian to hurry up across the road. And is normal.

As someone once said on here, it sounds like when you close the breach on a shotgun, "Doom" style.  I always think of that when going into first at lights, the louder the better for me!

And god forbid you engage first with a few revs on (ie when using choke) when it's cold - feels like you're going to lurch 10 yards.

Yes! That's what I'm going to think of from now on!

Mine does it as well. Alarming until you get used to it and, as fazersharp says, it does help pedestrians not to dawdle.

If I engage first (from second) at anything faster than a crawl too it feels like I'm going to lose a wheel, or a leg, or both.

We have a really bizarre corner up here that has a give way on - it's possible to take in 2nd, but sometimes I click down (some strange habit?)

Another example might be in slow moving traffic that I think is going to stop - click in to first ready. Again, maybe a strange habit to do it before I stop - maybe just laziness to get it changed before I put my foot down.

Pre-judging a gear selection is what I've been taught to do including shifting to first a little before needing to put my foot down. Though it was normal. But yeah, first becomes pretty redundant after I'm moving at anything but a crawl. Although we do have a corner that goes back on itself and steeply uphill at the same time that I use it for.

My box eye isnt as bad a crunch as my old Bandit 12  :eek ... Got into the habit of selectin 2nd before goin back to 1st when bike was cold as my mechanical sympathy went into overload every time :lol
Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it..
