Battery/electrics
#1
Mornin foccers,

Recently the Fazer (03, 600) seems to have developed electrical gremlins. Initally it seemed like the battery was knackered, so I changed it for new one. All was fine for a while but problem is back and seems to be getting worse.

The main issue is that the bike won't start if it has been left for more than a few hours. Instrument panel comes on as does fuel pump. But when I press the starter nothing, so I end up bumping the thing. Have checked all the fuses and they're fine. Put an ammeter across Negative battery connection yesterday and the amps seem fairly stable.

Was out for a blast this am and now the lights, front & rear, have stopped working. Indicators are still ok. Getting really frustrated. Sad

I don't use the bike everyday so wonder if underuse is part of the problem!

Any help would be appreciated.

A duff battery can sometimes drag the reg/rect down with it, and vice versa. Don't know if this is your problem, but worth checking out reg/rect. Replacing the battery when you have duff reg/rect will quickly kill a new battery.

Cheers Nick,

Is there any easy way to check if the reg/rect is duff/

You could check the resistance across each element of the reg/rec. The Haynes manual for a 600 Fazer '98 to '01 offers no help with this, saying you need to take it to a dealer. Do you have a Haynes manual for the '03 that gives the info?

Reg/rec went on my SRAD last week and the Haynes manual for that has this:

Thanks chaps for all the advice. Looks like the tank's gonna have to come off so I can get at electrics properly.

Ok chaps.

Took the rectifier out this evening and tested in, but it's working fine. So back to square one.

Interestingly the bike started tonight with no problems, which is unsual these days! I took the fairing off on Sunday so all front end electrics were disconnected too.

In summary the current electrical gremlins are:
Lights are not coming on - sidelights, headlights or full beam (but pass light is working)
Horn is not working
Rear brake light is not coming on
Indicators & hazards are working

I've changed fuses but to no avail. I suspect the next stop is an auto-electrician, but does anyone have any other tips???

Thanks

So the bike is back to normal. Transpires the battery was shagged due to underuse of bike! 2014 resolution - F.R.E.D. (foc'in ride everyday day)  :eek . Also a wire underneath the petrol tank was broken.  Anyway purring like a kitten now... next stop a petrol station far away!
