Missfire I think

Hi, I have a V-reg 1999 model with only 6k on the clock. Its been sitting around for quite a few years.
New MOT , taxed and ready to go, however,  I have a misfire I think which after I took the carbs off , taken apart , cleaned and left in an ultrasonic bath for 12 hours seemed to go away.
Slowly the misfire is creeping back, noticeable at lower revs first and has been creeping up the rev range to now its constant.
I am starting to doubt myself now with the basics, I bought a second hand coil set but its lengths are wrong. now I am really confused.easy
when sat on the bike the left coil does ( outside/left inwards) cylinder 4, cylinder 1.  coil 2 does cylinder 2, cylinder 3. is this right
The replacement coils are different lengths so wont reach in this configuration as I took off.
I am loosing the will to live as the carbs have been on and off many times....should I just by new coils to discount them from the fault hunt.
Does this sound like a spark issue, what HT lead goes where?

Without looking at my bike I think the left coil goes to cylinder 1 & 3 and the right coil is for cylinders 2 & 4.

Shouldn't need new coils after only 6k?
More people are born because of alcohol than will ever die from it.

Sorry to contradict but that is wrong.  Sad 
Left coil does 1 and 4 cylinders, right hand coil does 2 and 3.

If not already done so it might be worth fitting new spark plugs to start with. Then check and clean the low tension connections to the coils.

Other things to consider...

If it's been sat around for a while then is the battery OK? Can check it with a multi-metre.

Or if what you're seeing is an unsteady idle then it might just need carbs balancing.

Also people recommend snipping a little of the end of the HT leads and reconnecting as the cables can go bad after time.

from cold wet the exhaust pipes, see if they dry off evenly when its running, can help to see if it is one cylinder.
If so can then look plug, lead carb etc.
an induction type timing light is usefull to see if there is HT on each of the leads, and to an extent how steady the sparks are

Thnaks everyone, and yes hello all.

ok , I took the coils off and checked with a multi meter, all within range, back on and it sounded a little better.
Took a trip on the bike to my local Yamaha dealer, Hayballs of Salisbury, chap there has a listen and said its not ignition, more like carb balancing, as Ady said, plus throttle sensor may need adjusting or replacement.
Now,  when I broke down the carbs and put it all in an ultrasonic bath for 12 hrs I did not take off the sensor. waterproof I wonder..oops
as it happened I went out for a 120 mile ride and at about 30 miles out it seemed to get better, well a little.
So, new plugs, carbs cleaned out, (Hayballs quoted £220 for two new coils) so not that yet.
will next have a play with the sensor and get the carbs balanced. 
keep you informed, was a nice ride though from Shaftesbury Dorset to Barton on sea/New Milton,  sun out and hot,,,bliss

If you're gonna do a quick TPS check, a word of warning, if the needle goes to 10,000rpm do not switch off the key.
If this happens then start the engine first, then switch off.
Otherwise the needle just drops clockwise through gravity to the wrong side of the 0mph pin.
It's not a major, but it is fairing screen off and clocks apart to put it right again, so basically it's just unnecessary time consuming.


I had a TPS that was slowly breaking down recently and it causes the bike to feel a bit jittery and unsettled.
A used one will set you back around £40.


The TPS has to be positioned correctly before and after you do a carb balance by the way, so if the TPS is knackered then don't bother until it's been replaced.

When does it misfire? If it misfires at idle then I'd suggest checking the pilot/mixture screws and ensuring theyre all 2 turns out.
