Got a 1999 FZS600 and I want to fit pod filters. Seen some on ebay and I need to know what size the carb intake is where you would attach a pod filter? Does anyone know for sure?
Please stick to the topic, I don't need to know that pods will be a pain to set up!
The external diameter of the carb intake is 52mm.
Thant was quick and nicely to the point. Thanks Fazerider.
If you mean like the separate conical type K&N or S&B filters, they usually just go straight on the carb with a jubilee clip on each, which should come with the filters. Leastways, on older bikes that's how I've always found it to be.
Ditching the airbox provides the space for the pods, but you probably knew that anyway!
Some say...
common practice back in the 70s 80s....k+n being the choice for most,i plan to fit some to my 600 project, more power and they look great
One, is never going to be enough.....

Yeah they're for my project bike. Build thread coming soon.
Why do you want to change from the airbox?
Just as an aside I was thinking of getting plastic airbox covers chromed, I saw some on a Bandit , looked good !
As red98 said, used to be a common mod in the 70s & 80s (Zs, GSs, CBs etc). With a 4-1 pipe, up-jet on the mains, would increase performance and introduce a lovely induction roar for relatively little money. Everybody used to do it, but fuel injection on modern bikes requires different kind of tuning (PCs etc), so not so common these days. If I had a Fazer 600, I'd definitely be thinking about doing it.
The airbox don't come out of the frame easily.... well not in one piece anyway

I doing a project bike and it's the look that I want. Any performance benefits will be a bonus. I'll be starting a build thread soon.
I have done it and Dog London did it to their show winning fazer

Somebody on the site spent some time getting the jetting right. I would be surprised if you get a performance improvement.
good luck though!

Yes, it can be a bit hit-and-miss getting the jetting right. When this used to be a really popular thing to do, I think people had a better idea of how much to go up on the main jets for any given bike - with more people having done it, there was always someone around, whether it be an owner or a dealer, who'd be able to tell you what size to go with. Also, more dealers kept a good stock of main jets.
If you had a half-decent performance exhaust and did get the jetting right, you would definitely have an improvement in performance, at the expense of fuel consumption - nothing's free! :\ To fine tune, you may also need to change the needle settings. I would think Dynojet would have a kit or be able to advise on this. If not, gotta be someone out there who could help. Once you do have the air box out, it's much easier to pull the carbs off, if you need to change things more than once before getting it right.
Just looked at the Dynojet site - they do a Stage 3 kit which is for bikes with K&N filters and performance exhaust for some bikes. Unclear as to whether they do one for the Fazer, but you can contact them via e mail:

Thanks for the info guys. As far as I'm aware a lot of jetting changes can be done with the carb manufacturers jets, etc. Not absolutely necessary to go down the Dynojet route.
I used Steve Jordan motorcycles for my ZRX, which has pod filters, full Akrapovic and Ivans Pod Jet Kit. The settings Ivan recommended were near enough spot on. Steve tweaked it on his Dyno and the improvements are fantastic, so I'll probably take it to him for final sorting.
I used PDQ back in early 2000 with my ZX-7R and full Akrapovic system. They didn't do a very good job as there was a huge flat spot around 4,000rpm.
Personally I'd chase up the guy on the forum who went down this route.
I would think a dyno centre will charge you a fortune.

Yeah thanks, I've already got info from a couple. My plan is to use their settings, tweak and then when it's in the ball park get it on a Dyno for final setting up. It wasn't that bad for the ZRX, about £150 if I remember rightly, which is about what you pay to have a Power Commander set up.
Seems a lot of trouble just to get the pod filter look.? reading betwean the lines of various posts on the 600 engine there does not seem to be much more power to be got out of it.I would think there is a lot more tweeks to be done with fuel injection
mainly because of the tighter immissions. Also with a power cammander its just a case of tweaking software. whereas in your case its removing carbs and lots of dyno runs. Do lots of research before dismantle
Never used to have the option of dyno runs in the "old" days. I can't see the Fazer engine being more sensitive than those older bikes and, as said, once the airbox is out, much easier/quicker to pull the carbs off. Everybody used to do it, must have been a reason for that? And Ruby Racing seems to have plenty of previous experience of it, think he knows what he's doing....
